Igniting the AI Era: UNNC 30-Hour Hackathon – 100 “Geeks” in Extreme Innovation Experiment

Recently, the 30H AI Hackathon, jointly organized by the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) and the Computer Enthusiasts Association, concluded successfully. Nearly 100 students from UNNC, Zhejiang University, Tongji University, and Hunan University gathered to engage in an intense 30-hour innovation challenge using code and AI as their tools.

The judging panel, consisting of Dr. Daokun Zhang, Dr. Jiawei Li, Dr. Alejandro Guerra Manzanares, PhD candidate Xiaoying Yang from the AIOP Research Center, Dr. Yueyue Zhang, and industry experts, evaluated projects across multiple dimensions including technical implementation, AI depth, innovation, and commercial viability. Notably, the event introduced a self-developed Multi-Agent evaluation system — a first in domestic hackathons — to automatically score code quality and project documentation.

At the opening ceremony, UNNC Provost Professor Jonathan Garibaldi delivered a video address, emphasizing that the hackathon embodies the university’s philosophy of “promoting practical learning through courses.” He highlighted that hackathons go beyond fun and competition, aiming to spark creativity, foster teamwork, and encourage practical AI solutions to real-world problems. Computer Science sophomore He Siyuan hosted the event, while the Computer Enthusiasts Association organized an AI development efficiency workshop. Association President Liu Baicen (Year 3) shared knowledge on MCP, Skills, AI agents, and practical AI-assisted development techniques with over 60 participants.

Over 30 hours, teams focused on the themes of “AI Applications,” “Campus Life,” and “AIGC,” ultimately submitting 26 runnable projects. These ranged from intelligent agents and navigation algorithms to campus tools and embedded hardware for open days, demonstrating solid technical skills and the principle of “technology serving real needs.”

The demo session showcased standout projects such as EventForge (AI-driven event and survey platform), SildeMind (mind-map-based knowledge tool), CatRec (AI-powered campus cat recognition and management), and many others covering intelligent agents, data visualization, and scenario-based services.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Dave Towey, Head of the School of Computer Science, praised the students’ initiative and perseverance. Awards were presented as follows:

- First Prize: 《Li Dao》 (Sun Yijia, Ji Jiangshan, Chen Yumeng)
- Second Prize: 《DormVibe》 (Miao Chuni, Aditya Agrawal, Anson Hwong Lee); 《Welcome UNNC》 (Xu Jing, Kai Ning Tham, Tang Lu)
- Third Prize: AI RAG-based Knowledge Tool, Find Bud, Job Analyzer

Additional awards included Best Engineering Practice, Best AI Innovation, Most Commercial Potential, Audience Choice, and sponsor awards.

Although the 30-hour hackathon has ended, the exploration of AI continues. UNNC students have proven with action that code is not just a tool, but a force to change the world. In the future, the Faculty of Science and Engineering will continue building high-level innovation platforms to help more young talents grow through practice and write their own brilliant chapters in the AI era.
