NOTHING FOR US WITHOUT US
People living with NCDs must be at the table when decisions are made about their care, their communities and their future. Today we amplify community leadership.
NCDs cause roughly 3 in 4 deaths worldwide, yet funding for prevention and care still lags far behind.
This week we’re highlighting proven, cost-effective financing mechanisms, from health taxes to blended finance and integrated service delivery.
It’s Time to Lead. The Global Week for Action on NCDs starts today, and as we may know, NCDs are the world’s leading cause of death and disability. World leaders made commitments at HLM4, now it’s time to deliver. Five days, five leadership calls to action.

Strengthening Cancer Prevention Through Tobacco Taxation in Kenya.
The National Cancer Institute of Kenya @ncikenya, participated in a stakeholder engagement focused on the role of tobacco taxation in advancing public health and reducing the burden of cancer in Kenya. The discussion, which brought together key partners, examined how tobacco taxation can serve not only as a fiscal measure but also as an effective tool for disease prevention and health promotion.
Tobacco use remains one of the leading preventable risk factors for cancer and other non-communicable diseases. Increasing tobacco taxes has been globally recognized as one of the most effective strategies for reducing tobacco consumption, particularly among young people and vulnerable populations.
The public health benefits of tobacco taxation include lower tobacco consumption, reduced incidence of tobacco-related cancers, decreased financial hardship for families, and reduced demand on healthcare services.
The discussions emphasized the need for a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to cancer prevention. Effective cancer control extends beyond the health sector and requires coordinated action across policy, finance, regulation, research, and public awareness. Evidence-based interventions such as tobacco taxation show how strategic policy decisions can directly improve health outcomes.
As the national body mandated to coordinate cancer prevention and control efforts in Kenya, NCI-K remains committed to supporting policies and interventions that address cancer risk factors before they develop into disease. Preventing cancer through proactive measures is a critical component of achieving better health outcomes and reducing the overall burden of cancer in the country.
NCI-K appreciates the National Taxpayers Association @nta_kenya, led by Chief Executive Officer Patrick Nyangweso @PatrickNyangwe5, for convening this important dialogue and for providing a platform to discuss innovative approaches to cancer prevention. Partnerships across sectors remain essential in advancing evidence-based policies and strengthening efforts to build a healthier, cancer-aware nation.
Continued collaboration among stakeholders and sustained investment in prevention efforts will be critical in reducing tobacco use and lowering the incidence of tobacco-related cancers in Kenya.
