Today, on 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐍𝐨 𝐓𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨 𝐃𝐚𝐲, the 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 joins the global call to protect people and communities from the harm caused by tobacco and nicotine products.

For WPA, this is also a governance, ethics, and patient-safety issue.

Patient advocacy must remain independent, transparent, and free from tobacco industry influence. This is why WPA has established its 𝑨𝒓𝒎𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐 𝑵𝒐𝒏-𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒚, which clearly prohibits any financial, operational, advisory, or representational relationship with the tobacco and arms industries.

This commitment also supports WPA’s continued alignment with WHO standards for ethical engagement, including the principles reflected in WHO’s Framework of Engagement with Non-State Actors.

On 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐍𝐨 𝐓𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨 𝐃𝐚𝐲, 𝐖𝐏𝐀 stands with 𝐖𝐇𝐎’𝐬 call to unmask the appeal of tobacco and nicotine products and to protect present and future generations through stronger public health action.

Clinical research must be designed with patients as true partners. Patient voices, lived experiences, rights, and priorities should be central to research design, access, and participation.

Equitable access to clinical trials is a patient rights issue. No patient should be excluded from a potentially beneficial trial because of geography, language, age, condition, or lack of information.
