Something to think about : what does life look like 25 years from now if AI continues to improve.

I don’t think any AI community ( broad tech industry , academia , various timelines predictions) have done a great job articulating a positive long term future for humanity and what it means for the institutions and traditions that a lot of the world holds dear.

I think you ignore specific incidents in exchange for hypotheticals.

When @ClementDelangue had to defend his systems ( from an accidental closed model attack) last week he had to use an open model. One of many cases having practical access to models that you can control being key to the good guys having defense.

the 80s/90s F/OSS movement saw a cluster of tech intellectuals spring up all dedicated to software freedom* and hacker culture - RMS, @esrtweet , Richard Gabriel, Larry Wall, jwz, etc.

Feels like a resurgence now on people dedicated to a similar spirit around AI - thinking of @realGeorgeHotz , @antirez , @AndrewYNg , @beffjezos , @dhh and others.

Amazing to see @demishassabis and Google come out in strong support for open source AI.

They’ve been a strong part of the ecosystem with Jax and the Gemma series of models. To state the obvious, we would not be here without their publishing of a lot of the original Transformers research.

Heartwarming to see the industry rally around open source AI like this.

A strong and secure open ecosystem is important for the world to benefit from AI. We’ve always supported and contributed heavily to open source and science from Jax to Transformers to AlphaFold to Gemma open models which have now been downloaded 300M+ times. And the standards framework we’ve proposed supports responsible deployment of both open and proprietary models.
