Yesterday, March 8, 2025, a celebration took place under the guise of International Women’s Day, but in reality, it was a gathering of supporters of the Eritrean regime. We strongly oppose this attempt to mask support for the dictatorship of Isaias Afwerki as a celebration of women’s rights.

In Eritrea, women have no right to freely express their opinions. They are forced into lifelong military service unless they marry. They have no right to vote—just like all Eritreans, who live under a brutal dictatorship with no political freedom.

True Women’s Day celebrations should honor women’s rights and freedom, not support a regime that systematically oppresses them.

Israel, like other countries, should not grant protection to those who support the very regime they claim to be fleeing from. Asylum is meant for those who are persecuted, not for those who continue to show loyalty to a dictatorship. If someone openly supports the Eritrean regime—whether by celebrating its symbols, defending its policies, or engaging in activities that promote its ideology—then their need for asylum is highly questionable.

It is time to abolish group protection and take decisive action. Those who align themselves with the Eritrean dictatorship should be sent back without hesitation. The same applies to those who engage in criminal activities—whether minor or severe—since a country offering refuge should not have to tolerate lawlessness from those it shelters.

This is not a matter of debate but of principle. A person who flees oppression only to champion their oppressors is not a refugee; they are a political actor. Governments must recognize this contradiction and act accordingly. Instead of wasting time on endless discussions and legal loopholes, the solution is simple: revoke their protection status and ensure they return to the country they so proudly represent.
