We are once again recruiting at all levels! See links for postdoc https://t.co/Yg53SJaNE0 and technician https://t.co/vNzSiRp6PH position ads. Read more about our research in our latest preprint https://t.co/L5WecRGrBq and on our website https://t.co/tXDcLI2HMU.
Delighted to share that the @NIDDKgov funded @iidp_at_coh is reporting characterization of close to 300 organ donors.
Working at this scale there are lots of insights into the heterogeneity of islets even in people without diabetes but most importantly the data behind this paper are now available on the IIDP RDR for others to explore and use for their own research. At the @ADA_DiabetesPro meeting next month the NIDDK funded @PanKbase will also release a browser to explore some of these data in concert with other omic data.
It takes a village to do this type of science including dedicated funding over decades to support the infrastructure. Proud to have played a small part in this effort which was championed by #IIDP co-directors @cevansmo & @NilandLab and #HIPP director #MarcelaBrissova (not on X).
Huge shout out to the many amazing early career investigators who have contributed to this work over the last decade particularly co-first authors- #YasminyePettway (not on X), @SethASharp@_dianecait .

We are excited to bring the Speed Networking to the
HIRN Annual Meeting (Jan 13-14) #HIRN2025!
This is a great opportunity for pre-tenure early career PIs to set up a research collaboration with established PIs through a 1-on-1 speed meeting.
Studies of human #islets reveals the abundance of δ cells showed the strongest association with insulin secretion and was also associated with the genetic risk score (GRS) for #T2D@VUMChealth@VanderbiltU@annagloyn https://t.co/jHOr3yzdeB
Busy week - Just out in @Cell_Metabolism: The work with the Metallo lab @salkinstitute showing that trans-fat promotes hepatic serine palmitoyltransferase flux (SPT), VLDL secretion, and #atherosclerosis. SPT inhibition reduces VLDL and atherosclerosis. https://t.co/1zChxF3xlt
Have you ever wondered how mitochondrial and cytosolic pathways for de novo lipogenesis (DNL) interact?
We did!
Published Online today (https://t.co/l05A4qyCx1) and led by first-author @adam_rauckhorst, we traced 13C-labeled lactate/pyruvate, acetate, the ketone acetoacetate, and leucine in several mouse models of disrupted hepatic mitochondrial and cytosolic acetyl-CoA generating pathways.
Surprisingly, deleting the mitochondria citrate carrier (CiC) increased DNL from both exogeneous and leucine-generated acetoacetate. Overall, our findings delineate a mitochondrial-cytosolic DNL substrate supply network that may guide more accurate therapeutic development for MASLD and T2D.
Many thanks to our expert collaborators: No X Ryan Sheldon, now leading metabolomics at the @VAInstitute, who helped start the project and develop the necessary mass spec methods with @adam_rauckhorst; for @StanislawDeja and @Isotopomer for deuterium tracing by NMR and careful contibutions to quantitatively framing our mass spec data; and Tom Vallim of @TarlingVallim for guidance with in vivo gene deletion by AAV CRISPRs.
Please also see the exciting co-published manuscript from @WellenLab and Christian Metallo Labs (https://t.co/Wq1JH6AXZS) showing that bempadoic acid does more than just inhibit ACLY!

Huge congratulations to @bcellorg the winner of this year’s Grodsky Lecture. Extraordinary scientist and incredible collaborator - fantastic lecture - what a treat!
Our latest out today @Nature!
We revisit a century-old theory and show that metabolic gradients work hand-in-hand with genetic&signalling instructions to shape the embryo. Glucose isn't just an energy source, it acts as a major conductor of the body plan🍬
