As a Government, we have condemned and rejected the illegal infringement of Ethiopia into our national sovereignty and territorial integrity yesterday. Not an inch of Somalia can or will be signed away by anybody. Somalia belongs to the Somali people. This is final.
One million doses delivered and counting! Delighted to see that @Gavi’s partnership with @Zipline and the @UPS Foundation in Nigeria is proving the power of innovation by delivering vaccines to hard-to-reach areas using drone technology.
Dr. Ahmed Al Mandhari, Regional Director for WHO/EMRO in the last 5 years, has been an inspirational leader, mentor & brother.
His leadership has brought EMR to new heights, and we thank him for his dedication, humility & compassion. He will always be remembered. #HealthForAll
Shabaab more than met their match today. Here dies the myth that Somali soldiers have no ‘values’ or ‘principles’ to die for. These two fine soldiers showed us all what bravery, valor & sacrifice is all about! Let’s do good by our troops. May Allah be Merciful to the fallen. 🇸🇴
.@WHO staff are our greatest asset.
Thank you, @FaisalRashidLo1 for your dedication to help #EndPolio for good. Your work makes us #ProudToBeWHO.

WHEN SOMALIA DEMANDED PORTUGAL ARMS EMBARGO
This is what pan-African solidarity looks like! In 1972, Somalia asked the United Nations Security Council to impose a total arms embargo against Portugal until Lisbon granted independence to the African territories it colonised. Portugal had been embroiled in a bitter war against independence movements ever since the early ‘60s. It was a costly affair, consuming 40% of its budget. So expensive was the war effort that it resulted in the 1974 coup.
Watching Somalia’s envoy make the case, we’re reminded of the importance of internationalism as one of the tools used in the struggle for liberation. A sense of shared struggle has rallied Africans around anti-imperialism throughout the decades. In the same way, as the call for independence became more pronounced, the settler administrations of Rhodesia, South Africa and Portugal saw safety in numbers.
Portugal was among the earliest colonisers and was a pioneer of the slave trade, despite its tame appearance today. Its 400-year rule in Angola culminated in a 15-year war for independence that took 500,000 lives.
Angola was the last Portuguese colony in Africa, gaining independence in 1975 before plunging into a CIA-fuelled civil war until 2002.

Thank you for the opportunity to demonstrate how can we strongly and powerfully advocate for sustainable investment in health. Improving health of the people will be catalyst for sustainable economic growth in Somalia. A nation becomes healthy first before it becomes wealthy. @WHOSom
2/ As an early career researcher, I thank Dr Malik @mamun567, Dr Farid @drfaridazam and my colleagues @WHOSom for the opportunity in participating in @VARN2023 where intellectual minds meet. Thanks is extended to @gavi and @sabinvaccine for organizing this event.
1/ I am exciting to attend #VARN2023, and exchange ideas with fellow immunization specialists from the globe. During 3 days, I had the privilege to share my experience working with Hard to reach communities to increase the vaccine uptake specially Zero dose children.
1/ At day 3 of #VARN2023, Hinda Omar, a health educator from Minnesota Department of Health presented a successful case study on peer-to-peer strategy to boost vaccine confidence among Minnesota's Somali community.
2/ This method addressed concerns about the MMR vaccine, and with Somalia set to expand its immunization program to include new vaccines, Hinda and her team's research findings offers critical insights for the proper introduction of new vaccines.
You are working at the frontline. The success of this country in reaching over 44% of people being fully vaccinated against primary series COVID-19 vaccines would not have been possible without your courage, wisdom, resilience and ability to think differently. Congratulations !🎈
