Wes Streeting has this morning set out his tax plans - specifically bringing capital gains tax into line with income tax
He says that the current system is unfair because it penalises work
Higher or additional rate taxpayers will pay 24% on gains in the current financial year. Streeting said that the rates should mirror income tax bands - so 40% for higher rate taxpayers and 45% for additional rate taxpayers
He says that the approach could raise £12billion a year
Streeting said: “A member of my family is a cleaner in Lancashire. She pays a higher tax rate on her salary than her landlord pays for the growing value of the home she lives in. She slogs her guts out, he puts in far less effort, yet the state rewards him more than her. And we wonder why people are angry.
“The system is penalising work. It’s not fair and it’s bad for our economy. We need a wealth tax that works. A pound made from simply owning assets should not be taxed less than a pound made from a hard day's work. We can do it in a way that is pro-growth, pro-entrepreneur and pro-work.”

Now comparing his income v the income the Duke gets FROM the inherited assets is all apples.
So wealth taxes NO, tiered income taxes + anti avoidance rules YES.

Firstly, what people can "live on" differs.
Secondly, your solution advocates:
- higher prices / inflation up spiral
OR
- staff lose job
- high st shop empty
- owner lose livelihood
- customers lose choice
Supply, demand, immigration all linked.

Angela Rayner has been moaning on a lefty podcast that her son ( 29, married, one child) can’t afford to buy a house as he’s on a “ very low income”.
Life ain’t fair which is why the bank of mum of dad often helps out.
If Ms Rayner hadn’t evaded £40K of stamp duty she could have sent her lad the £8K fine she faces from HMRC and he could have used it as a deposit.
Even on minimum wage a 40 hour week would give her son £26.4K with a mortgage bank prepared to lend 4 times pay to low earners.
Have been looking at prices in his mum’s constituency of Ashton and Lyne, for £120K you can buy a two up two down terraced home.
Sure it’s a starter and doesn’t compare with his mum’s £800K place in Hove, but it’s a beginning
Although he comes from a Socialist household the son might even be prepared to work extra hours and his wife may have to pitch in.
Owning your own home is not a right. At the beginning it takes sacrifice.
Having a famous mum, making good money, bleating in public about son’s finances is not helpful.
