Google capped Gemma 4 at 31B. One guy said screw that. He didn’t just duplicate layers. He performed a kind of neural surgery: he inserted brand new layers that were engineered to be invisible at first perfect ghost copies that changed the model’s output by exactly zero.

This created empty mental real estate inside the AI so it could absorb entirely new knowledge (Korean legal + advanced STEM) without destroying what it already knew. Then he trained it.

The new layers didn’t stay dormant. They woke up and started contributing more than the original ones. While Google plays it safe, the open source underground is quietly building the models they won’t. This changes everything.
