The only upside I can see from this whole mess is that there is a whole bunch of VCs with former or current Administration affiliation who we can now safely ignore on AI policy.
They have shown that everything they ever said on AI regulation was just politically motivated.
Quote: "This is how USAID spent your tax dollars"
I think people have lost the will to try fact-check this guy due to the volume of lies he spreads.
Also it's actually pretty difficult with this image and quite time consuming.
It just happens I had nothing better to do. /1
People are not getting how significant this news – The White House delaying GPT 5.6 – is.
Here’s the context and a suggestion.
Both @pmarca and @DavidSacks did everything in their power to keep the White House from meaningfully regulate AI.
About a month ago, sparked by Mythos, the White House realized that zero-regulation was an insane idea, and that some AI, sooner or later might pose massive risks.
What we have now is actually (in some ways) the worst of all possible worlds: a White House that de facto *is* regulating AI, but without transparency.
That leaves businesses and investors in doubt.
What we really need is a bipartisan committee—with transparent criteria and the judgements of independent scientists—and not just snap judgements from the White House.
The reflecting pool debacle is the perfect visual metaphor for the Trump Administration - superficial approaches to complex problems leading to worse outcomes than if he had done nothing.
In the best case scenario, Trump struck a deal to reopen a Strait that was open before the pointless war he started, with the IRGC demonstrating its control over the Strait and potentially extracting fees plus sanctions relief. Thousands of innocents - including hundreds of children - dead in Lebanon and Iran for no reason. U.S. troops killed and wounded. U.S. embassies and bases in the Middle East badly damaged. U.S. standing in the world obliterated. U.S. munitions badly depleted. Hundreds of billions spent. Prices up everywhere. More global economic fallout to come. Putin strengthened and enriched. Just a catastrophic situation even in the best of circumstances. A profoundly shameful episode in American history no matter what happens next.
This seems to be the prevailing sentiment amongst non-climbers...
But it's simply wrong.
Honnold's climb of Freerider on ElCap (which was captured on film by the legendary Jimmy Chin) is EASILY 10x more impressive than what Alex did on the skyscraper.
I don't think it's possible to fully appreciate the absurdity of Honnold's free solo of ElCap unless you yourself have been on that climb.
I have...
I've been up there...
I've done all the moves...
(and this was during a period of my life wher I was in the top 0.00001% of strongest climbers in the world)
And I got my ass handed to me.
The 13a crux 23 pitches off the ground is unbelievably technical and requires a level of precision that, to execute without a rope, is nearly unbelievable.
This is a hill I will gladly die on:
Honnold's free solo of ElCap is THE single most impressive athletic achievement in human history.
Nothing else comes even remotely close.
(and certainly not this skyscraper).
If you want to have your paradigm for what humans are capable of turned upside down...
Go watch Free Solo.

The top 5 universities by number of unicorn founders in the US are:
#1 Stanford (135)
#2 MIT (100)
#3 Harvard (80)
#4 UC Berkeley (68)
#5 Indian Institute of Technology (65)
One college in India is #5 in the world for American unicorns. That's the power of immigration.
It's important to draw my lines in the sand:
Things are, actually, pretty bad right now.
And Trump is, actually, doing much of what the "resistance libs" said he would.
It's not TDS to say so.
I've tried to put the threat into terms my more conservative readers might hear:
HUGE Immigration News! $100k H-1B fee will not apply to students changing their status from F-1.
That mainly targets WITCH IT companies that do this, who are planning on using the L-1 instead.
If you studied in the US, the fee doesn’t affect you. I’m now positive on this rule!
What makes me most angry is that there's nothing Americans "get" from destroying USAID in a way that directly results in the death of the world's poorest children. It barely even qualifies as an act of selfishness. We're doing it for nothing. The debt picture is completely unchanged.
Being an insanely rich country that controls its own currency means we have a genuinely magical ability to save hundreds of thousands of lives around the world with a budgetary rounding error. And MAGA's like: "No thanks, it sounds woke."
A reminder that we did this for what is literally a budgetary rounding error, and our fiscal situation is now markedly worse due to the debt and deficit bomb passed in Congress. I really wish @elonmusk would grapple with the reality of DOGE’s work
