Trial work can be mentally, physically, and emotionally backbreaking. It can tear you down to the studs at times.

But it matters. The civil justice system is the only thing left protecting the everyday American. The People have been abandoned by the institutions they trust to act in their best interests.

At NHTSA, the FDA, and other agencies, the line between the regulated and the regulator was often nowhere near as clean as the public assumes.

And this isn’t a Republican problem or a Democratic problem. Regulatory capture runs deeper than whichever party happens to control Washington. This isn't a "red team" or "blue team" problem. It's an "insider" vs. an "outsider" problem.

Corporations, insurers, and institutions have armies of people paid to protect them. The injured person only gets one shot, and needs a lawyer willing to stand at the gate.

It is us, or it’s no one.

I’ve heard the saying that “God gives his toughest battles to his toughest soldiers.” But when I see the disciples that Jesus chose and suffered for His name sake, I don’t see Him choosing the “toughest soldiers”, as I learn about men and women in the past and even today who have laid down their lives for Jesus, once again I don’t see God choosing His “toughest soldiers.” But I see a strong and mighty God choosing weak men and woman, and empowering them by His Holy Spirit to face some of the toughest battles and be used for His glory.

I once thought I was a “tough soldier” until I met Jesus, I then realized that I’m so weak without Him, and apart from Jesus I can’t do anything. I need Jesus daily. The only way that I can truly become who God wants me to be and truly do what God wants me to do, is not by my power not by my might, but only by The Spirit of The Living God. Thank you Jesus.

7 years ago this week, I tried my first plaintiff case with Brett Turnbull in Los Angeles. It was a civil rights - malicious prosecution case. We got brought into the case about 2 weeks before trial.

The week before I had just left a defense firm (and colleagues) I loved. A place where I genuinely believed I would stay my entire career, and where my best friends (who are more like my brothers) worked.

My wife and I had 2 kids under the age of 5, and if I’m being honest, I was terrified of the change (thankfully she had a great job, otherwise not sure I would’ve had the courage to jump sides…).

Now, I was in LA, knowing very few people on the plaintiff side, helping try a civil rights case. It felt like I was on a rollercoaster…

We lost the trial, which was heart-breaking b/c the client deserved justice for what the LAPD and LA Sheriff’s Dept did to him (its nearly impossible to win a malicious prosecution case b/c of all the immunity issues…).

Eventually, our client got his law license and is now a prosecutor himself in the greater LA area. Prosecuting REAL criminals. He’s a true success story in the face of overwhelming adversity. A great man.

It’s been a wild ride so far. No telling what the next 7 years will look like!

@creativeatlaw Judges are HORRIBLE about holding themselves to same standard they hold lawyers. Take, e.g., the Judge in the NDGA who got caught having sex in chambers.

A lawyer would get CRUCIFIED for doing that in a courthouse. The 11th circuit tried to hide her ID.
