Diane Lane was 18 years old, sitting across from Johnny Carson, and she handled the whole thing better than he did

She was there to promote Rumble Fish, her second film for Francis Ford Coppola. Carson opened by asking why she had kissed the previous guest and not him.

"He's just a very attractive man," she said.

"Well, I suppose he is more the grandfatherly type," Carson answered, then turned it into a bit for the audience about too much sexual attraction going on between them.

She let it pass and went straight to the work.

On the title: "rumblefish is sort of a slang name for Siamese fighting fish, which is symbolic of a relationship that goes on in the film between Matt Dillon and Mickey Rourke."

Then, almost in passing: "It's the second film I did for Coppola." And: "I'm doing a third one now as soon as I get done."

She had just finished high school without attending the ceremony. Quintano School for Young Professionals. "Got my ring. Got it in the mail."

The reason she was not there in person: "this is the 5-month anniversary date of the start of the film Streets of Fire."

Five months on one production, at 18, with a Coppola film about to open and another one queued up behind it. She had been working since she was six.

Carson asked what she did for her 18th birthday.

"I did my laundry, actually."

He waited for the punchline. There was not one. There was a reason.

She explained that a surprise party had been thrown for her two years earlier, and that "it was a fiasco for me because I had to play hostess to a bunch of people I did not know and it was like a burden, you know?"

So she made a decision about the next one:

"I said, this one is going to be just another day in the life of, and I went out and I did my laundry."

An 18-year-old actress, five months into a shoot, opting out of her own celebration because the last one made her responsible for entertaining strangers.

Then Carson asked whether her parents were entertainers. He fumbled the question twice and had to rephrase it.

Her answer: "My mother was a Playmate of the Month, October '57. I'm very proud of her for that."

Carson asked if she realised it at the time. Lane: "Well, I was not even an idea at that point."

He did the arithmetic out loud, 18 and '57, noted that her mother had been 19, and asked Lane directly whether she would do something like that.

"No."

He asked why not.

"Well, because you have to reveal quite a bit more at this point. That's one good reason. There's many other good reasons why I would choose not to do that. I don't have to."

And then the line that closes the whole exchange:

"Mom wanted to get a lot of exposure and she did."

Wanted to take a moment to thank someone who gave @SkyrootA its first real lift-off—Mukesh Bansal.

8 Years ago, we sent him a cold LinkedIn message.

He replied.

We met that very weekend.

Soon after, he became Skyroot’s first investor with a ₹10 crore cheque.

At the time, there was no space policy. No proof that we could build an orbital rocket. Immense technology risk. And every reason to say no.

Yet he looked beyond the uncertainty. He believed in our passion and saw possibility long before there was evidence.

But what stayed with me even more than the investment was the trust.

He gave us complete freedom to build, trusted us to make the right decisions, and was always there to mentor us whenever we needed him. More than capital, he helped shape our thinking with one piece of advice:

“Always do the right thing. This journey will be much longer and much harder than you imagine. Build two things with equal importance: the product and the organisation.”

This has guided us through every phase of the journey and continue to shape how we build Skyroot today.

The first cheque is never just capital. It is belief.

Every great startup needs someone willing to take that first leap of faith—when all they can really invest in is the founders’ conviction.

India needs many more such risk-takers backing ambitious deep-tech entrepreneurs long before success becomes obvious.

First of all it is NOT Muthulakshmi Reddy's house. It is a dilapidated building in the 32 Ground property of Bharani Deepa Kattalai (Endowment) of Tiruvannamalai Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple - in Adayar, Chennai.

This very valuable property (do the math - one ground of land is said to be Rs. 5 Crores in Adayar) worth Rs.150 Crores cannot be given to Adayar Cancer Institute to renovate this booth bungalow - just like that.
32 grounds x 2400 sq. ft x Rs. 12700 per square foot (guideline value) turns out to be Rs. 97.54 Crores. Commercial rent as per HR&CE Rules is Rs. 29.26 lakhs per month.

Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple, Tiruvannamalai is being administered from 13.12.1951 by FRAUD by TN Govt and @tnhrcedept - That continuing FRAUD cannot be a license to accommodate Adayar Cancer Institute to keep that house and surrounding area.

It is unfortunate that the Commissioner - HR&CE - in 2024 - during DMK rule- miserably failed to defend this temple property in Court as he ought to have.

Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has ordered demolition of the tilted portion of an 18-storey residential tower built by SNN Raj Corp after structural damage raised safety concerns.

The nearly Rs 200 crore building, comprising 49 apartments, was found to have tilted due to alleged unscientific construction. GBA Chief Commissioner M Maheshwara Rao met the owners, who agreed to the demolition. The builder will undertake the demolition of the affected portion to prevent any future disaster.

The verse describes the Goddess performing the “Marakkaal Aadal”, a dance on wooden stilts, while vanquishing the deceitful, sword-wielding demons. Kalladam, another classical Tamil text, also refers to the same tradition:

கவைத்தலை மணிவேல் பிறைத்தலைக் கன்னி
வடபால் பரிந்த பலிமணக் கோட்டம்

Marakkaal Aadal was one of the traditional dance forms known in Tamilakam and was performed during temple festivals. The video beautifully brings to life this fierce and majestic dance of the Goddess.

In Mahabharata (Karna Parva, Section 41), there is a famous parable told to illustrate hollow bravado & shifting allegiances:

A crow lived near a wealthy merchant’s family by the ocean & grew fat & arrogant on the leftover scraps the children fed him every day. 1 day, magnificent swans arrived, birds equal to Garuda in strength & range of flight. The children jokingly told the crow he was greater than them all.

Believing it, the crow challenged the lead swan to a flying contest. “I know a 101 different flying tricks!” the crow boasted. “Rising, diving, spinning, darting...watch me!”

The swan calmly replied, “I know only 1 simple way of flying, the way all birds know. You may use whatever tricks you like.”

They took off. Near land the crow showed off its elaborate maneuvers & seemed impressive for a while. But as they flew far out over the open ocean, with no shore/resting place in sight, the crow’s wings grew exhausted. It began to sink toward the waves, panic-stricken.

Desperate, it cried out for mercy. The swan picked the crow up, carried it safely back to shore & left. The crow finally admitted: “Fed on others’ leftovers, I foolishly thought myself equal to Garuda.”

A deep appeal to the students: The street protests have become that same open ocean & the political agitators, camera-wielding influencers & opportunistic agencies are the ones throwing you the "leftover scraps" of viral attention, likes & fake validation.

They convince you that you are invincible, that your anger makes you Garuda & that you are leading a revolution. They encourage you to show off your "101 tricks", the clever placards, the theatrical chants, the viral reels, the face-offs with authority.

Then comes the open ocean.

When the political circus moves to the next trend, the cameras pack up & the state machinery rolls out actual legal consequences, those agitators fly away. They have legal retainers, political immunity & 0 skin in the game.

You are left alone over the deep water.🙏🙏

A touching moment this morning as I opened the newspaper and saw a tribute to our beloved Mehboob Ali Sir. My very first badminton Coach.

It has been 15 years, but not a day goes by without gratitude. You were my very first coach at the old IRISET Railway courts when I was just seven and a half. You didn’t just teach me badminton, you made me fall in love with it.

Many coaches have shaped my journey since, but the first one will always remain special.

4 marks out of 800.

B) Obstetrics and Gynaecology seat:
44 marks out of 800.

C) General Surgery seat filled at:
47 marks out of 800.

D) Biochemistry:
minus -8 marks out of 800.

E) Transfusion Medicine:
10 marks out of 800.

In NEET-PG 2025, candidates with scores as low as –40 out of 800 were allowed to participate in PG counselling. A negative score was considered qualifying.

These extremely low scores, at which seats were actually allotted, indicate a serious crisis in academic standards. A reasonable minimum qualifying merit must be established to maintain the integrity of medical education and the healthcare system.

Forget about dialogue or discussion. So far, neither the Government nor the Opposition has said a word about this because it does not suit their agenda, and it would affect their vote banks and political interests.

Even those who are protesting today in the name of concerns about the education system are not addressing this issue because they too have political ambitions and know that speaking about it could cost them support rather than gain it.
