Life advice nobody told you: Always default to praise of people who aren't in the room. The way you talk about someone who isn't in the room is one of the loudest signals about the energy you carry. An observation about the most impressive, magnetic people I've been around: They never speak badly about people who aren't there. They never use underhanded or discrediting comments. They glow about them, or they say nothing. If everyone is speaking negatively about someone, it's perfectly reasonable to opt out and say nothing. It shifts the entire power balance of the conversation in your favor. It shows a level of stoic awareness and calm that stands out. We all silently catalogue how others speak about people who aren't in the room, because we know that we may be the topic of that conversation as soon as we leave. Those who default to praise command the room and silently set a standard of safety that everyone else can feed off of.
It took me decades to really grok this in my bones: If there are aspects of ourselves we cannot own, we project those aspects onto other people. The clearest way to notice this is when we are triggered, judgmental, or annoyed at other people.
It is once again time to pay property taxes, meaning it is once again time to have tax payment portal sites disabling copy/paste of my account number to... [checks notes] PREVENT TYPOS.
This might actually be the issue I'm most bothered by in my life.
@dvassallo@jtkeepsmore Yeah I didn't realize there was a term for this. I've been struggling to explain to people why I'm done with the investee side of venture/angel funding. Thanks for the succinct way to explain it - well done!
@spencertbarber@Tyleralley@realEstateTrent came here to say this. I thought we were going to have way more influence on personality, but so obvious now (~10 yr later) they were 'fully baked' from day one. has def changed the way I process the world.
And 7 Up is my favorite series of all time!
are things blue, or are things red? the blue things hypothesis has trouble accounting for blood, clown noses, and the chinese flag. but the red things hypothesis can't explain jeans, sapphires, or even the sky. overall i think it's very much an open question
@quantumfiber I already talked to your support after a 25 minute wait. Maya suggested I reset my wifi router - bang up job tech support. And then said service would be restored in 24-48 hours. I could count the service interruptions with CenturyLink over the last 6 years on one hand. Maddening
@IvanVendrov@atroyn hah, stay strong. crazy how much flak you're receiving for just assuming best intent. hard for me to believe many of these dissenters are humans
