@MatthewJBar show me the counterfactual guy who said "after an AI can pass the turing test, after 2 years we won't agree on whether it is a person, and it will have weird spiky capabilities"
@MatthewJBar is that not also surprising to most people? not that we're not dead, but that it's 2 years after turing-capable AI and it's both hotly debated whether AI is conscious, or even intelligent, and it's only beginning to transform work and academia
@kalomaze this isn't a double-blind experiment. take 100 currently unsolved problems ask "how many of these will likely be solved in the next X months?", then actually check in X months.
@GeoffMeckWolf @jimstewartson@jay_writer4751@codetaur i appreciate the apology. my tone was also not great but i was actually hoping i was going to show you something you hadn't considered with the claude chat. but no worries
@GeoffMeckWolf @jimstewartson@jay_writer4751@codetaur thanks for uh, dragging me into this completely different thread. after you indicated that you didn't want to keep talking to me. do you wanna come over friday night and play halo?
@GeoffMeckWolf @codetaur here's an AI which can discover nothing outside of its training set and is doing nothing remarkable at all: https://t.co/kGduJGE0h7
@allTheYud i appreciate the satirical climate change solutions, but they fall flat because 50% of the left would never support non-guillotine solutions to climate change
@allTheYud it's bizarre how confidently people lean towards red or blue without noting how much rests on the value of X% blue pressers needed for no blue pressers to die. as X increases, higher level of coordination and trust is needed.
@levie you are the same sort of person who 3 years ago thought there was going to be such a thing as a "prompt engineer". good for you for hopping on each bandwagon that rolls your way
@allTheYud yes, the median voter theorem, the one that suggests that both parties will be very similar and centrist, and that plenty of people will switch back and forth between parties based on fairly small policy proposals. that sounds like the US for the last 30 years.
@appliedfirst@TheChiefNerd barbers often tell me that my haircut will kill me and everyone in the world, or at minimum change society forever. it's the oldest trick in the book!
@TheZvi@ilex_ulmus@bayesian_wasian like what is the rules? what kind of data should orgs be allowed to gather? how much? what should they be allowed to do with it? or does it matter which orgs have which data, and does it matter how those orgs are governed or what additional capabilities they have?
@TheZvi@ilex_ulmus@bayesian_wasian most people object to mass surveillance because size alone can become dangerous (you can deanonymize people). both anthropic and DOW are claiming they get their data from legal (commercial) sources. if DOW could use claude to spy on people, so could anthropic
@ESYudkowsky i don't understand what your point is. "vegans are a fringe minority, so don't cause inter-community conflictls to split the movement"? the "don't eat bees" post is extremely typical EA analysis.
