If you checked your alt text through Shopify's public products.json, ignore the result. That feed doesn't carry alt at all, so every store looks empty.
Open one product's own .json instead (https://t.co/9FHQVkk7NI) and search for "alt".
@driesdegelder In our local checks the two games often overlapped. When we asked Perplexity for the best businesses in UK towns, most answers cited the website of at least one business they named, and most also cited a directory or review site.
@VengeonsP On the reviews point: in our own checks, Perplexity answers about UK local businesses cited directories and review sites far more often than Google's own pages. Google ratings did show up, but the answers usually credited the firm's own site or a directory.
@vendozo_net Keeping product pages updated is the real problem, agreed. For WooCommerce stores it gets worse once you factor in AI answers pulling from feeds, not just rendered pages, so a title fix on-site doesn't always propagate to what the AI actually reads.
@Goldikam Right, and most catalogs aren't ready for that read. Title says one thing, structured data says another, variants missing GTINs. An agent won't guess at the gap the way a human shopper might, it just moves to the next listing.
Clutch was cited in 17 of 30 Perplexity answers to "best SEO agency in <city>", 30 UK cities, one run each (CitedGEO, 28 Sep 2026).Run an agency? Click the links in that answer for your city. Is Clutch there, and are you on it?
@BowTiedBills Worth adding for local: Perplexity answers tend to name more firms than the 3-pack. We counted 496 of them for UK local-services questions in late Sep, and the median was 5 firms per answer, so the first 3 on the map aren't the whole shortlist there.
@Kevin_Indig On the reviews part of the loop: in our local-services runs (496 Perplexity answers to "best <profession> in <town>, UK", inline links only), Trustpilot was cited in 190, more than any other domain. We haven't measured the same for product queries yet.
@liadyosef Helpful split by job. For a small Shopify store, which of the four with real traffic is something the owner has to act on, and which does the platform already handle?
@SEOKeval Similar picture in Perplexity, though for agencies rather than products. We asked it for the best SEO agency in 30 UK cities, one run, and Clutch was cited as a source in 17 of 30 answers, The Manifest in 11 and DesignRush in 9.
35 of 37 UK store product pages we checked had no shipping or returns fields in their markup.
Free check: drop your store URL. First 20, next 48h.
We check robots.txt for ChatGPT and Perplexity crawlers, plus product markup and text without JS, then reply with up to 3 fixes.
@jessievbreugel Agree they're two different games. In 496 Perplexity answers to "best <profession> in <town>, UK" (inline links only), Google Maps or Search pages were cited 0 times. At least one directory or review site was cited in 410 of them.
@seo_bint_ejamil For small shops we'd start by asking ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask and noting who it names. We tried 15 "where to buy <product> online" questions for 15 small shops we picked, one run each. It named the shop in 4 of 15.
@Nick_zv_ Good list. For ecommerce we'd add one thing to step 3: check your product markup. We opened 37 UK shop product pages and 35 had no shippingDetails or hasMerchantReturnPolicy, the two fields Google recommends for a product.
The median Perplexity answer to "best <profession> in <town>, UK" cited 15 sources (496 answers, CitedGEO, 27-28 Sep 2026).Click the links in an answer for your trade. How many of them mention you?
@theseoguy_ We logged 496 UK local answers in Perplexity. At least one directory or review site: 410. Google Maps or Search pages: 0. A GBP page: 1. Reddit: 3. So the directory side fits, but GBP and Reddit barely showed up as links, at least in the UK.
@jakezward Agree it's an expansion, not a replacement. Off-site still shows up in AI answers: for "best SEO agency in <city>", Perplexity cited Clutch in 17 of 30 UK city answers we ran on 28 Sep.
@alexgroberman Agree that local firms lag. Your "Best of [City]" point shows up in our data: 52 of 250 UK local Perplexity answers cited a third-party "best in town" list. Cheap first step: ask the question yourself and click every link in the answer.
@StockChaser_ Even the tracking part is harder than it looks. We ran 40 UK local questions through Perplexity twice each, a few hours apart: only 3 of 40 pairs named the same list of firms. A one-off visibility check says very little.
