Sea cucumbers are the janitors of the sea. Through experiments in French Polynesia, Georgia Tech researchers showed that corals in areas without sea cucumbers were 15 times more likely to die than corals with sea cucumbers.

Sea cucumbers are the janitors of the ocean floor. Repopulating this overharvested animal is vital to restore reef health according to new research from @GTSciences@codyclements6 and Mark Hay. https://t.co/WE01I9Ft3z
Coral diseases are commonly sediment-associated. Clements et al. conduct a field experiment in French Polynesia and Palmyra Atoll showing that removal of sea cucumbers that clean reef sediments while feeding increases coral disease.
