The Yunus Regime is not satisfied having banned the activities of the #AwamiLegue or having its registration as a political party cancelled via the Election Commission: It is now bringing legal amendments to individually disqualify leaders, activists, and supporters of the party to contest the next #election.
The Interim Govt’s questionable legal amendments to the Anti Terrorism Act led to the banning of the activities of the Awami League, #Bangladesh’s largest political party by organisational units and vote share. The Election Commission then cancelled the registration of the party citing the government’s ban.
The exclusion of the AL already severely impacted the inclusivity of the next nat’l election. However, the regime is not yet satisfied. It has now proposed two legal amendments which would disqualify most leaders, activists, and supporters of the party from contesting elections even as independents, thereby moving towards a completely one-sided election.
Under the proposed amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Ordinance 2025, any individual formally charged at the ICT will be barred from holding public office or contesting local or national elections. It should be noted that the prosecution will only have to “file” the charges, the tribunal does not even have to accept the charges, for the disqualification to kick in.
Similarly, the proposed amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972 will bar individuals from elections who are considered “fugitives”, as in people who are accused or convicted of certain offences and remain absconding.
In both these cases, individuals do not have to be convicted of the offences to be barred from contesting the elections, but simply being accused or charged would suffice, thereby effectively reversing the presumption of innocence.

Hundreds of thousands of leaders, activists, and supporters of the Awami League have been charged at the ICT and other general criminal courts for crimes against humanity, murder et al. These amendments would mean that these people will be barred from contesting the next nat’l elections even as independent candidates.
Hope the influential apologists for Yunus, both at home and abroad, is noticing with alarm how under the Nobel Peace Laureate’s leadership, Bangladesh is moving towards the most one-sided election in its history.
