“Reverb is memory in motion.” Tomorrow, September 11, Ethiopia turns the page to a New Year. But calendars can turn pages that history has not yet finished writing. For Tigray, the past does not sit quietly behind us. It reverberates. It reverberates through mothers who buried their children. Through children who learned to recognize the terror of aircraft before they learned the meaning of peace. Through survivors of sexual violence. Through families scattered by displacement. Through empty classrooms, damaged hospitals, abandoned farms and graves whose stories have still not received justice. And now, as another New Year arrives, reports of drone strikes and civilian deaths make the language of “renewal” painfully difficult to embrace. What does new mean when civilians can still fear the sky? What does peace mean when families remain displaced from their homes? What does reconciliation mean without truth, accountability and reparations? A peace agreement may silence a battlefield, but it cannot command memory to be silent. Trauma has its own chronology. Grief does not recognize New Year’s Day. And history does not become history merely because those with power would prefer to move on. That is the tragedy of unresolved atrocity: Yesterday keeps entering today. The explosion ends, but its echo travels. The funeral ends, but absence remains. The war is declared over, but the survivor continues carrying it. That is reverb. That is memory in motion. So on this Ethiopian New Year, I cannot simply say, “Forget the past and begin again.” Some things must never be forgotten. We remember not because we are prisoners of yesterday, but because remembrance is part of preventing tomorrow’s crimes. We demand justice not because we reject peace, but because a peace built upon silence, impunity and abandoned victims is only a fragile pause between tragedies. The New Year should therefore be more than a celebration of another calendar. Let it become a moral reckoning. Let children inherit classrooms instead of fear. Let mothers look toward the sky without terror. Let the displaced finally return home safely and voluntarily. Let survivors receive dignity, healing and reparations. Let truth be spoken without political convenience. Let accountability replace impunity. And let “Never Again” finally become an obligation rather than a slogan. A truly new year begins not when the calendar changes— but when human life becomes sacred again. Happy New Year to those celebrating.
