The first thing Alex Salmond did on becoming FM was to remove the position of Lord Advocate from sitting in Cabinet. He wanted law officers who were "independent of politics". Nicola Sturgeon reversed that decision, bringing the LA, the head of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), a body guilty of malicious prosecutions back into cabinet. The same COPFS that brought a case against Alex Salmond of which he was acquitted on all charges at great expense to the public purse. He was awarded a record £550K in legal expenses, the maximum allowed. On the back of failing to secure a conviction for the former leader, the SNP want to move to juryless trials. They also want to exercise control over how the legal system is regulated. A Lord Advocate that sits in Government, juryless trials and political control over the regulation of the legal system is stuff on banana republics.
