After two years, the #Samos2 are finally free - the father of a drowned child was charged with "endangering the life of his child" and therefore faced up to 10 years in prison, pushing the criminalisation of refugees to an absurd new low.

The good news is that the #Samos2 are free today. N. was acquitted of all charges and Hasan was given a suspended sentence of 1 year and 5 months.
In 🇬🇷 Hasan faced 230 years + life imprisonment for steering the boat; N. faced 10 years & was charged for the death of his own son after the boat capsized. On May 18, N. was finally acquitted and Hasan was sentenced to 1.5 year on probation. #Samos2

While we are still relieved about the good outcome of yesterday's #Samos2 trial, the next trial against so-called "boat drivers" is already taking place today, this time in #Kalamata.
The two defendants have already spent more than a year in pre-trial detention!

#Samos2 trial: N. was acquitted and Hasan, charged with smuggling after he briefly steered a boat, received a probationary sentence.
In the end, N. & Hasan have been released but countries across the EU are criminalising and incarcerating desperate people who are seeking asylum.
We are all incredibly happy! 🥳

#Samos2 https://t.co/KenQsSp5YK
