Last week, I had an honor to join Hon. Min. Dr. Mark Cyubahiro Bagabe of @RwandaAgri and the other partners in @RubavuDistrict for the official launch of a national 5-year project "Five Fruit Trees per Household".
A groundbreaking initiative began with the planting of 5,400 fruit trees, and more than 437,350 fruit trees will be planted throughout the project duration. 1,800 trees were planted in households and established youth orchards whereas 3,600 trees were planted in schools located sectors of @RubavuSector, @GisenyiS, @RugereroS, @NyakiribaRubavu, and @NyamyumbaSector.
This project will help households fight malnutrition and sustainable eradicate stunting rates. Beside nutritional benefits of eating fruits, commercial aspect of fruit farming is truly promising hence making this project a part of collaborative effort to end poverty.

Meet Prudence Sendarase and Gloriose Uwamwezi, two avocado exemplary farmers based in @NyanzaDistrict and @HuyeDistrict of @RwandaSouth. Let me share with you what I learned from them during my visits this week.
Avocado farming is far beyond one tree or two, for just home consumption. It can be a sustainable profitable business due to its high global demand due to increased awareness of nutritional benefits of Avocado.
According to Prudence, he dedicated 10 hectares of his land in @NtyazoS Sector to grow avocado for commercial purposes, after identifying that most of the fruits consumed are imported and unreasonably expensive. He started 4 years ago, and now he makes more than 8 million Rwandan Francs (Approx. 7,000 $) per year and the demand is increasing.
He has created 10 Full-Time Jobs and 30-day laborers, most of them being women and youth. To achieve this, he is very consistent with good agriculture practices such as spacing, timely pruning, pest and fertilized management, and mulching. Thanks to @RwandaAgriBoard for not only unwavering support to him, but also the provision of high-quality seedlings of renowned varieties, Fuerte and Hass. To fight moisture loss in drought period, he practices GAP practices such as Mulching.
On another hand, story of Gloriose truly inspirational. Despite being a widow, she stood up for herself. She tapped in after heard about avocado processing plant to be based in @HuyeDistrict, though, it never happened. Instead, she discovered the huge untapped avocado demand at the market which she alone cannot satisfy until now. She started with 400 trees and now she owns a 3-hectare plantation with 1200 trees. With avocado farming, she makes more than 4 million Rwandan Francs per season, and she was able to pay school fees for her 3 children depending on this business.
Beyond her success story, her farming is subject to drought, and she believes that if she obtains a support from @RwandaAgri to irrigate her land, the production will increase and contribute to even more impact to end malnutrition and create more jobs.
As wind up my story, don't expect to start with 3-hectare land or 10-hectare land as Gloriose and Prudence. Don't tap in to make 8 million or 4 million per season. If so, you won't start or if you start you will disappoint yourself. Start small, set a plan, learn through the process, and whenever something goes south always remember why you started before you give up.
