ah got you i think the best way would be to get a load of heightmap meshes, export them into Blender, resize and arrange according to your terrain in a kind of ring structure, and then merge / blend them together. I'm not an expert on Blender or other standard VFX tools tho you'd have to watch a tutorial
if I understand your question it's basically that a lot of these tools create finite terrain "planes" with lots of creative expression but are ultimately limited in scalability and aren't true "planet engines"
fundamentally it's because they aren't purely procedural so they can't be extended without manual artist intervention (although I hear Gaea is trying to fix this with their next update). you see a lot of game studios (No Man's Sky, Star Citizen) have their own in-house engines but these aren't commercially available
these are the exact problems I'm solving with my engine so stay tuned :)
@mlsprwr yep it's basically a purely procedural version of Gaea atm
next will be:
- river animations and environmental effects
- 3D noise structures
- eventually urban environments
