The #DRC’s decision to bring a case against #Rwanda before the International Court of Justice is a significant step toward accountability through international law.

For too long, millions of civilians in eastern DRC have endured killings, sexual violence, forced displacement, and the devastating consequences of decades of the Rwandan aggression. Justice cannot erase that suffering, but it can help establish the truth, clarify state responsibility, and reaffirm that no country is above international law.

Justice and the end of impunity are the foundation of a lasting peace.

The ICJ proceedings represent an opportunity for legal scrutiny; not only in the interests of the Congolese people, but also for the credibility of the international rules-based order.

🗞️ We have just published a strategic analysis in @TheHill — The main media outlets read daily by members of the U.S. Congress.

Our conclusion is clear:
👉 “@PaulKagame’s strategy is directly undermining U.S. national security objectives.”

The ongoing war led by the #RDF in eastern #DRC — now sanctioned by the United States — is reinforcing a long-standing supply chain system that benefits #China, weakening U.S. efforts to build peace and secure critical minerals essential to its defense and industrial base.

Sanctions are a step in the right direction, but they are not enough.

Washington must significantly increase pressure on #Rwanda, while:

▫️ supporting the Congolese armed forces,
▫️ enabling Kinshasa to fully regain sovereignty over its entire territory and strengthen its capacity as a central, sovereign partner,
▫️ and deepening direct U.S.–DRC mineral partnerships.

Ultimately, only a clear shift in the balance of power on the ground—imposing real strategic costs—can alter Kigali’s course, potentially reshaping the political future in Kigali.

Without such a shift, the United States risks leaving its mineral security in China’s hands.

WHAT @HARIANAVERAS IS FACING IS NOT “MEDIA CRITICISM.” IT IS INTIMIDATION AND HARASSMENT BY RWANDA — AND IT IS EXTREMELY SERIOUS.

We are watching a coordinated campaign by the Rwandan state to silence a journalist:
troll networks, aligned influencers, state media, and security services—all amplified and legitimized by the Minister of Foreign Affairs @onduhungirehe himself.

The argument used against her does not even hold legally or journalistically.
In a state governed by the rule of law, a journalist is never accused or disqualified for:
- how questions are framed,
- which topics are prioritized, or
- which political narratives are not adopted.

That logic only exists in authoritarian systems—where journalists are expected to repeat official talking points and are punished when they don’t.

One of the most absurd elements of Mr. Nduhungirehe’s post is the idea that a journalist’s integrity is determined by whether she echoes a government’s preferred enemies, vocabulary, or geopolitical framing. That is not journalism. That is propaganda.

Let’s be clear: Rwanda is a repressive state when it comes to press freedom.
According to Reporters Without Borders, Rwanda ranks 146th out of 180 in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index. RSF documents:
- total state control of the media,
- surveillance of journalists,
- arbitrary arrests,
- forced exile,
- and journalists killed or disappeared—inside Rwanda and abroad.

With such a record, Rwanda and its regime have absolutely no lessons to give on journalism.

An African woman journalist, working as a correspondent in Washington, is now being publicly targeted and discredited by a foreign government with a well-documented record of transnational repression. Her safety is at stake. This must be taken seriously.

Several journalists have already paid with their lives for reporting facts that displeased the regime in Kigali—both inside Rwanda and outside its borders.

This episode also shows where the Rwandan regime stands on the eve of new US sanctions expected in the coming hours: instead of accountability, it shifts blame onto journalists. That is extremely grave.

This case must be treated urgently.

Nothing she is accused of makes sense in a democracy.

Everything about this campaign makes sense in an authoritarian system afraid of independent reporting.

Why does the government constantly speak about the Western Province?

Before the @rpfinkotanyi took power, it claimed that peoples from the Western and Northern Provinces would be allowed to farm tobacco.

Citizens living in the Western Province should be vigilant and avoid being deceived by the #RPF . They should understand that the #inkotanyi does not truly love the Rwandan peoples.

Jamais je n’accepterai d’être traité de négationniste. Je reconnait le génocide perpétré contre les Tutsis.
À aucun moment, dans cette interview, je n’ai nié ni minimisé le génocide contre les Tutsis, ni ignoré les blessures profondes que le peuple rwandais (Tutsis, Hutus et Twas) porte encore aujourd’hui.

La seule chose que je souhaite ajouter sur ce point est que votre commentaire malveillant et mensonger constitue une preuve du manque de volonté en ce qui concerne la réconciliation et le dialogue objectif et serein.
C’est ce commentaire qui, plus que tout, me pousse à m’exprimer sur le contexte de cette interview.
En tant qu’homme rwandais, dont la vie a été lourdement marquée par l’histoire sanglante de mon pays, j’ai choisi le chemin de la vérité, de la réconciliation et de l’unité.
C’est dans cette recherche que j’ai accepté l’honneur de parler à l’ancienne Première Dame à propos de son histoire afin d’avoir une vue plus complète sur les faits qui nous ont menés jusqu’ici.

Je suis convaincu que la voix de la Première Dame, qui a été accusée injustement des pires crimes, mérite d’être entendue afin que le peuple rwandais puisse se reconstruire sur la base des faits vérifiables et des témoignages des témoins clés de notre histoire.

Je me permets également de partager ma déception concernant l’état de l’unité du peuple rwandais. Alors que je constate la volonté des jeunes Rwandais de connaître notre histoire et d’en discuter ouvertement et objectivement, je constate aussi qu’il existe des figures qui considèrent notre histoire comme une propriété leur permettant d’exclure d’autres Rwandais souhaitant le bien commun du peuple rwandais et motivés par une réconciliation véritable.
