Rangelands in the spotlight.

The United Nations has declared 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (#IYRP2026). This presents an incredible opportunity for us to capture and showcase the incredible diversity, beauty, and the challenges characterising the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) rangelands.

Rangelands in the HKH region are the lifeline of rich and diverse flora and fauna, source of critical ecosystem services and the mainstay of several pastoralist communities.

But the rangelands are also under immense climatic and anthropocentric stress.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation in Nepal (FAO Nepal) have launched a photo contest to capture the surreal beauty and the changes that are unfolding in these rangelands.

In the high mountain regions of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), climate change is no longer a distant future. It is already reshaping seasons, livelihoods, and the meaning of ‘home’. As climate risks increase, families adapt in different ways. Some stay at home and find new ways to cope. Others move away for work, safety, or survival often returning when they can, carrying responsibilities across places.

Set against the characteristic blend of arid, desert-like hills and towering snow-capped Himalayan mountains of Mustang in western Nepal, at 2,800 metres above sea level, in this podcast, Neil Adger, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Exeter, UK, and Amina Maharjan, Senior Specialist in Livelihoods and Migration at ICIMOD, discuss migration – not as ‘abandonment’, but as adaptation; not as loss alone, but as a way of holding on.

To mark International Migrants Day, the podcast ‘Roots and Routes’ reflects on the quiet decisions people make when the land they depend on begins to change. It explores how people stay connected to their roots even as they take new routes and what resilience really looks like when change is constant.

ICIMOD will be at @COP16Oficial - the latest gathering of @UNBiodiversity the key global forum for multilateral decision-making on biodiversity, with participation from over 190 member countries.

This year’s COP16 is the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework – an ambitious roadmap with 23 global targets aimed at halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030.

Central to these goals is the 30x30 pledge, which calls for the conservation of 30% of the world’s land, waters, and seas by 2030.

But the challenge goes beyond that: COP16 will also focus on mobilizing billions in financing, stopping species extinction, reducing pollution, and ensuring equitable participation for Indigenous peoples and local communities.

Thousands of delegates are expected to attend #COP16, including 12 Heads of State and Government, 100 Ministers, plus governments, indigenous peoples, youth groups, scientists, businesses and civil society from every corner of the world.

Countries are expected to submit updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) this year.
