Fine. If an intern is a student, let's honour that fully. Student hours. Monday to Friday, 8AM to 5PM.
No weekends. No night calls. Public holidays off.
And since students choose their institution, each intern studies from the hospital of their choice.
Why deploy someone to Mbale when their family home is in Busheyi and can easily walk to Ishaka.
A student selects where they learn.
That is how education works.
No more emergency calls at 2AM.
No more covering wards alone on Sunday. No more C-sections at midnight.
After all, a student cannot be held professionally liable.
A student cannot be the last line of defence in a labour ward.
A student cannot be the reason a mother survives the night.
But the moment you strip the allowance, that is exactly what they become. A student.
So let us be consistent.
Either they are students, and we treat them accordingly.
Or they are doctors, and we pay them accordingly.
You do not get to call them students at the payroll office and doctors at the emergency ward.
Pick one.
As a Senior Consultant, the reason I haven't raised my voice is simple:
When the interns are gone, I will gladly show up at 5AM, clerk 80 patients, draw the blood, and run the night calls myself.
I am superhuman. Obviously.
As a Senior Nursing Officer, the reason I am silent is obvious:
I have no problem running three wards alone, fixing lines, tracking vitals, delivering babies, doing the paperwork.
I don't need hands. I have dedication.
As a Policymaker, the reason I haven't spoken is elegant:
The interns are a budget problem I solved by terming the students.
My children are not doing internship in Uganda, after all.
As a Patient, the reason I haven't complained is clear:
Even if the doctor cutting me open has worked 36 hours without food, just cut me open and take the baby out.
Hunger sharpens the hands. Everyone knows this.
As a Citizen, the reason I am unbothered is rational:
None of my children is a medic.
I have my pastor.
The system runs on miracles. Always has.
This policy is brilliant.
Let's all stay quiet and watch the magic happen.
Kabaka Mulondo indeed fell in love or slept with his mother in law (he didn’t know though) and when he was informed, he realized the mistake he had made. And created this practice that stands up today. Mulondo’s foresight in addition to Baganda not sleeping with people of the same clan has preserved the Baganda up today. When relatives sleep with each other, there is a likely chance that they will pass on hereditary diseases to each other. That is how the Bachwezi disappeared….
Policy moves slowly. But that slowness? It's fertile ground for real, lasting change. Our advocacy efforts have helped build a policy environment where adolescents can finally thrive.
Don't mistake slow for stuck. Keep going. #PolicyChange#AdolescentHealth
Change doesn't happen by accident. It's built, one leader, one campaign, one bold action at a time. Through the SHIFT campaign accelerator, we are building the next generation of change agents.#SHIFT#Leadership#SocialChange
Comrades, there is a clear difference between fuel availability and fuel price. Globally, most countries are facing fuel price increases. Many at astronomical rates. However very few like Uganda have continued to maintain stable prices and have enough stock in country with more stock on the way.
At @UNOC_UG we are committed to sharing more details as we monitor the situation.

#DidYouKnow that Uganda’s 🇺🇬 struggle to raise enough revenue is squeezing funding for key public services?
Close to 40% of the national budget is now absorbed by interest & debt repayment, leaving fewer resources for sectors such as health & education, among others.
🗣️| In his high-level reflections, YTJN team lead, Allan Murangira (@Mura_Allan) highlighted that,
‘Young people must actively shape budgets, tax rules & political reforms to ensure governments prioritise resource allocation & utilisation for youth-led development’.

YTJN Team Lead @Mura_Allan spoke on the influence of young people on the direction of digital taxation negotiations.
Q: How are the youth going to shape the direction of the negotiations, especially on digital taxation?
A: The challenges that youth are facing are rooted in one thing: resources. Therefore, we need to give them room to speak about what they need most. Currently, the committee is accepting written submissions until 5th December 2025.
Additionally, this conversation needs to transcend spheres. From #climatechange to #health, #education, #peace, and security, as exemplified by the #UNTaxConvention and #COP30 in Brazil, which happened at the same time in different venues. This opens up access points for various youth groups to make their submissions.

Let’s talk about the #UgandaNationalYouthManifesto
Meaningful youth participation in #revenuemobilisation and accountability processes means that young voices lead discussions on where public money goes, #transparency becomes the norm, and #justice is translated into policy.
When young people understand how national revenues are generated, spent, and overseen, they gain the power to demand fairness, equity, and accountability in the systems that influence their daily lives.
This way, #Taxjustice is automatically #youthjustice❗

The pathway to a just and youth-friendly tax regime is clear: policies must keep pace with the realities of young entrepreneurs, formal and informal, urban and rural alike. Only through ongoing reform, robust support systems, and genuine participatory tax justice can Uganda unlock the full power of its youth as architects of a more prosperous future.
