Yesterday, a senior management official at @UBAGroup reached out to me regarding my views on the treatment of the young woman in UBA’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP) who addressed @TonyOElumelu by his first name.

I made it clear that, in my view, this was not a “culture clash”; it was a class war, a reflection of the deeply entrenched hierarchy and class consciousness that too often determines who is considered entitled to demand deference and who is expected to provide it.

I gave a simple example, if Tony @TonyOElumelu son or daughter addressed the family gateman or driver by his first name, hardly any Nigerian would bat an eyelid.

In fact, many of the same people outraged by this young woman calling him “Tony” would probably expect the gateman or driver to address Elumelu’s children with exaggerated deference. That tells you immediately that this argument is not really about “African culture” or respect. It is about class, status, wealth and power, about who society permits to speak casually to whom.

More importantly, I specifically requested that, given the enormous public opprobrium, ridicule, and attacks this young woman has been subjected to, UBA must immediately provide her with appropriate psychosocial support.

Whatever anyone thinks about how she addressed @TonyOElumelu, no young employee or trainee should be left alone to absorb the psychological consequences of suddenly becoming the target of a massive public controversy.

She should not be sacrificed on the altar of corporate hierarchy or social-media outrage. Her dignity, welfare and mental well-being must come first. Let the poor breathe!

Except Strathmore doesn't have research-for-public-good muscle of state funded institutions. Treatment regimens for malaria, HIV, livestock diseases (Nagana etc) came from state funded universities that stays on those issues for decades. The guidelines used to treat everyone in hospitals in Kenya (private or public ) came from the Kenyatta National hospitals (attached to UoN school of Medicine) etc.

Private sector has use in education, but it can never ever replace public education.

Kids in Kiambu have eggs thrice a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). Fortified uji daily and a pint of milk every Thursday. Every kid in a county ECD facility. 52,000 of them.

Re eggs, to break even at around 12 bob you need to make your own feed. 80% of the operating costs is feed. The cost of home mixed feed is 61 bob a kilo. You want this to go down to 45 bob if you are to make a 10 bob egg (2 bob profit included).

It can be done but the opportunities to optimise are very limited given the constraints (power, logistics, vector control, disease control, feed, hen-day lay of above 85%, bird cost etc).

I have been thinking of doing it on an idle piece of land but I grew up doing this stuff and I am still traumatised by the labour side of it.
