D'Souza doesn't need to have a conversation with Sproul. He needs to read Saint Augustine's anti-Pelagian writings. For that fact, he could do a little reading in the 2nd Council of Orange, Prosper of Aquitaine, Aquinas' Summa Theologica, Gottschalk, Ratramnus, Bradwardine, Rimini, Wycliffe or Luther.

For that fact one can easily find the Apostolic Fathers teaching a simple doctrine of election.

What Calvin taught, on this topic, was traditional Augustinian anti-Pelagian doctrine.

When the Synod of Dort condemned the Remonstrants and Arminius, they were defending traditional Augustinian anti-Pelagian theology. They condemned the Remonstrants and Arminius repeatedly as Pelagians, whose theology had been condemned at Ephesus in AD 431.

D'Souza is a gifted writer on politics (he helped me) but he's not a theologian nor, apparently, is a scholar of the history of Christian doctrine. No need to get upset when an amateur, even a well-known, amateur begins attacking Augustinianism.

When Gottschalk rediscovered Augustine's anti-Pelagian writings for himself in the 9th century and repeated to others what he had learned he was beaten and jailed. Between the 6th century and the 9th century Augustine fell out of favor. He remained out of favor until the late middle ages when the Augustinians experienced a renaissance contra the Franciscans and their Pelagianism.

Without the neo-Augustinian recovery of the anti-Pelagian theology, there would have been no Reformation. It was the first thing Luther recovered on his way to becoming a Protestant. Erasmus objected and Luther wrote De servo arbitrio, which became a standard text among the Reformed. It fell out of favor among some Lutherans but Calvin followed it closely.

The doctrines of original sin and unconditional election are wonderfully scandalous and we should not marvel that people are offended. It's nothing new.
