On June 15, Afghans for Progressive Thinking (APT), in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Germany to the UN, will host a youth dialogue on the future of the UN in Afghanistan, amplifying the voices of Afghan women and youth and highlighting the ongoing human rights crisis.

The event will feature perspectives from youth advocates, artwork and stories from young women, and recommendations to the international community on supporting rights, education, and meaningful participation.

Displaced International proudly celebrates DI Fellow Lamar Zala Gran following UNESCO’s powerful feature story on her fight to keep Afghan girls learning in the face of repression, displacement, and exile.

Lamar’s story is the story of a generation of Afghan girls whose classrooms were shut down overnight after August 2021 — but whose dreams refused to disappear. Forced to flee Afghanistan as a university student, she turned pain into purpose, helping create online and hybrid education programs connecting Afghan girls to teachers, mentorship, leadership training, and hope across borders.

As Lamar says, for Afghan girls, education is “dignity, survival, and hope.” In a world trying to erase them from public life, learning itself has become an act of resistance.

Today, Afghanistan remains the only country in the world where girls are banned from secondary and higher education. More than 2.2 million Afghan girls are denied schooling, according to UNESCO and UNICEF. Yet girls continue studying in secret, through screens, candlelight, and extraordinary courage.
