Joint press statement by LCK Freedom Foundation and 9 other CSOs on the violence being experienced ahead of the August 2026 general election.
"We, the undersigned Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Zambia, are alarmed at the disturbing and rapidly deteriorating state of political freedoms in our country. As Zambia prepares for the 2026 General Elections, we are witnessing a pattern of organised violence, intimidation, and systematic harassment mainly directed at opposition political figures and their supporters. This is an assault not merely on individuals, but on the democratic foundations of our Republic.
We issue this statement in fulfilment of our duty as guardians of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, and in the firm belief that silence in the face of injustice is itself a form of complicity."

“A modern AGOA must build on its 25-year foundation to further deepen the economic ties between the United States and sub-Saharan Africa.”
@USTradeRep invites public comments on the modernization of the AGOA, which is authorized through Dec 31, 2026. The deadline for submission of comments is May 15, 2026.
Today we are 46 years old as an independent nation. Let us use the day to renew our resolve to defend the values of the liberation struggle-in 2026, it means one thing: UNITING TO DEFEAT CAB3. The movers of CAB3 are not just undermining, but also denigrating our independence.
This Independence Day, we WEAR BLACK to mourn those who died for the cause #OneManOneVote; to resist those who wish to entrench rule by the few over the many; and to stand in solidarity with all those in prison for standing up for the dignity of all. Join us!

Three years ago, on April 6, #Ethiopia journalist Genet Asmamaw was arrested in a sweeping crackdown on reporting about conflict in the Amhara region. She remains behind bars on terrorism charges that carry a potential death sentence.
She is due to present her defense in May.
Genet’s continued detention, along with three other journalists also accused of terrorism — Meskerem Abera, Dawit Begashaw, and Gobeze Sisay — underscores the risks facing independent media in Ethiopia and the criminalization of reporting on matters of public interest.
@pressfreedom calls for all four journalists' immediate release and for Ethiopian authorities to stop criminalizing the press.

BREAKING: Uganda Law Society and @ealawsociety confirm the arrival at Entebbe Airport this morning of a dozen people forcibly removed from the United States (in the name of deportation) and effectively dumped in Uganda through an undignified, harrowing and dehumanising process, for the benefit of unnamed, private interests on either side of the Atlantic.
We have gone to Court to challenge this process.

“Across 23 African countries, annual US health assistance has declined from approximately $16 billion under previous programmes to just under $3 billion under the new health arrangements, a reduction of roughly 82 percent.”
Uganda’s Sovereignty Bill should alarm anyone who cares about basic freedoms.
Yes—governments can regulate foreign funding. But under international law, restrictions must be clear, necessary, and proportionate. This bill isn’t.
Vague terms like “foreign influence” + sweeping state powers = a blueprint for abuse.
The real danger? It doesn’t stop at Uganda’s borders.
By targeting diaspora ties, this law risks enabling transnational repression by proxy—silencing critics abroad by putting their families, colleagues, and partners at risk back home.
This is how fear travels.
We’ve seen this model before—in places like Russia—where “sovereignty” laws became tools to crush dissent and label critics as foreign agents.
Uganda must not go down that path.
Protecting sovereignty should never mean criminalizing dissent or intimidating voices beyond its borders.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention is clear: the detention of Tundu Lissu is arbitrary and unlawful under international law. Immediate release, compensation and accountability are required.

Ranking Member @RepGregoryMeeks issued a statement on Friday after the UN’s International Fact-Finding Mission concluded that the RSF committed acts of genocide against non-Arab communities in Sudan’s El Fasher city:
It’s almost a week since four Cameroonian journalists were detained for five hours and their equipment seized by police. Their devices have yet to be returned. Their sin? Reporting on African migrants deported from the US to Cameroon.

"I'm glad that @SarahBireete has been released on bail, but the charges against her should be dropped entirely by Ugandan authorities.
The sustained repression against civil society and opposition leaders in Uganda must end." -@SenatorShaheen
