American actress Angelina Jolie shared satellite images on Instagram of Gaza before and after Israel’s genocidal war.

“The purpose of punctuation is to make writing easier to read,” Louis Menand writes, “and making writing easier to read means giving greater and greater numbers of people access to the written word.” A new book by Florence Hazrat, celebrating punctuation in all its forms, makes the striking claim that the history of punctuation is the history of humanity itself. It has entered into a class of books about the mechanics of writing—to which Sarah L. Kaufman’s “Verb Your Enthusiasm” belongs. But how do we think about these sentences, words, and marks amid a current evolution in the phenomenology of reading? Authors like Hazrat and Kaufman want us to understand reading as a bodily experience, one which can transmit an author’s state of mind, or set of emotions, to our own. Menand considers the strange power of, among other things, punctuation: https://t.co/CSxml48kTB
"Reading the World" is a new documentary about Paulo Freire, the acclaimed Brazilian educator whose revolutionary approach to teaching connected literacy to critical thinking and democratic participation.
It draws on rare archival footage of 1960s Brazil and weaves together the memories of farmers, students and educators who took part in Freire’s culture circles, his method of teaching adults to read in as little as 40 hours by drawing on their own lives, communities and experiences.
“Paulo Freire was one of the most influential educators of the past century and is still widely studied all around the world. But the studies often focus on his ideas, his philosophies, his books, and much less is known about his original praxis,” says co-director Catherine Murphy.

On this International Day of Peace, we are reminded that peace is never secured once and for all. It is built every day — through dialogue, trust, human rights and the choices we make as societies.
For more than 80 years, @UNESCO has worked to build the foundations of peace through education, science, culture, freedom of expression and dialogue.
At a time of growing conflict, polarization and mistrust, we must invest more than ever in the institutions, skills and relationships that allow societies to confront differences without violence and build a shared future.
Peace is for everyone, everywhere, every day.

While governments pretend to fight poverty (with their "Sustainable Development Goals") under the motto "Leave No One Behind", they are doing the opposite:
A few dozen billionaires now dominate the world economy;
2.7 billion cannot afford a healthy diet.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
#CUBA - the future of post capitalism and #degrowth society? There are so much to learn from it after going thru the cruel US sanctions for more than 6 decades. My visit to Cuba in 2017 gave some mixed impressions - need to deconstruct. https://t.co/Uc27otx2o6
