🚨World Malaria Day 2025: "Kurandura Malariya Bihera Kuri Njye"
Today is #WorldMalariaDay!
As we mark World Malaria Day 2025, the @RwandaNGOForum joins @RwandaHealth, @RBCRwanda, @WHORwanda, @CityofKigali, and key partners in celebrating the national event at Groupe Scolaire Ndera, Gasabo District, under the powerful theme: "Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite" "Kurandura Malariya Bihera Kuri Njye"
This day calls us to reflect, recommit, and re-energise our collective efforts toward a #MalariaFreeRwanda.
While significant progress has been made, ending malaria requires more than medicine, it demands strong partnerships and collaboration, resilient health systems, and empowered communities leading the charge.
To accelerate progress, the focus should be placed on:
✅ Strengthening data-driven surveillance for smarter resource allocation and targeted interventions
✅ Expanding integrated prevention campaigns
✅ Ensuring last-mile access to diagnostics and treatment tools
✅ Mobilising high-risk communities through tailored interventions
As a proud #Malaria implementing partner in Rwanda, @RwandaNGOForum delivers targeted interventions prioritizing high-risk easy-to-reach groups, ensuring no one is left behind in the fight to #EndMalaria, including:
1️⃣ Youth in Boarding Schools
2️⃣ Rice Farmers
3️⃣ Fishermen
4️⃣ Mining Workers
5️⃣Hotel Staff and Clients
6️⃣Healthcare Providers
7️⃣ Security Personnel
8️⃣Refugees
9️⃣Prisoners
Progress happens when communities take ownership. This #WorldMalariaDay, we celebrate the inspiring stories of community members, local leaders, community health workers (CHWs), healthcare providers, and everyday Rwandans who are driving change, testifying that #ZeroMalariaStartsWithMe.
Together, we can #EndMalaria in Rwanda. Let’s #Reinvest in innovation, #Reimagine community-led solutions, and #Reignite our commitment to a healthier future.

Today, we celebrate the women and girls leading the fight against malaria. 🌍In many endemic regions, women are at the forefront, working to #EndMalaria.
This is why we must invest in #WomenInScience to combat malaria.

Today #Rwanda declared the end of the #Marburg outbreak. Leadership, partnerships, science & strong community involvement have proven key to bringing the outbreak to an end.
Congratulations to the government, partners, health workers and @WHO colleagues who supported all aspects of the response to ensure effective control and stopping the spread of the virus!
To accelerate progress against malaria, we need to keep innovating. Introducing and scaling up quality new tools, boosting supply & demand and cutting costs are key. @GlobalFund, @Gavi, @UNITAID and @PMIgov are shaping markets in this critical area.
RBC onboards outstanding MSc students from #Rwanda -n universities to join the Artemisinin Resistance Monitoring in @jumuiya (#ARMEA) project.
Artemisinin, a key #malaria treatment, is facing resistance in Africa with mutations in Plasmodium falciparum Kelch-13 (PfK13) detected in Rwanda, #Uganda, and the Horn of Africa.
This poses a major threat to malaria control in #Africa. @RBCRwanda aims to generate local data on the spread of PfK13 variants and identify risk factors for resistance.
To engage young scientists, RBC funds MSc research through a model that combines academia and industry to address pressing health challenges.
Thanks to @ChariteBerlin, @chu_butare, @ucbukavu, and @IDIMakerere for the great collaboration.
As DP MVD Cell chair, @WHORwanda Rep @BrianChirombo hosted @USCDC Principal Deputy Director @nirav_uscdc, @FCDO, @EUinRW, @AfricaCDC & @JhpiegoRwanda. They discussed partner support to 🇷🇼 govt Marburg response efforts, challenges & optimized support during this 42-day countdown.
Today, Jhpiego joined @RBCRwanda, policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders in the health sector for the National Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) themed: "Educate.Advocate.Act Now", to catalyze multisectoral response to the growing challenge of AMR.

**Dedicated Provider and Team Saves Lives**
At the heart of our healthcare community, heroes like @GHertier shine brightly. Early one morning at 2 AM, a call came in from a patient in dire need. She was bleeding heavily, and her husband was unavailable. Without hesitation, Gashema sprang into action, driving to her location to bring her to @RwaMilitaryHosp .
Upon arrival, the situation was critical; her clothes were soaked in blood, and the baby's heart rate was dangerously low. Gashema's quick thinking led him to summon the neonatal intensive care unit team, including the skilled @michael_ishimwe. Together, they worked with precision and urgency:
- The baby was swiftly delivered.
- Immediate resuscitation efforts were initiated with rescue breaths.
Despite encountering some complications, the resilience of both mother and baby prevailed, and now, the newborn is ready to go home.
This story isn't just about one night; it's a testament to the spirit of dedication, teamwork, and the critical collaboration between Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) and Neonatology.
**Thank you, @gashema and @ishimwe.** Your commitment to your patients exemplifies the essence of what it means to be a healthcare provider. I'm honored to be part of this exceptional team that truly makes a difference one heartbeat at a time. #HealthcareHeroes #MFMPride

A few points on recent developments in the Marburg response:
- We’ve sequenced the virus genomes from three branches of a single cluster.
- Using genomic tools, we found that all sequences share a single zoonotic origin, meaning the virus jumped from animal to human just once.
