@wtgowers The analogy breaks in that creating software is mostly extrinsically motivated (having users, sales, company executives and shareholders, covering specific needs etc) while mathematics is mostly intrinsically motivated (directions set basically from the math community).
@paulg Recent hugging face etc incidents showed that openai does not care to have any oversight over what their models are doing, which contradicts them being concerned about them being dangerous. Maybe they could start by regulating their own internal guardrails first?
@TechTre3k@markgurman@Apple Yeah not so great for content i guess. Because nobody else gives a fuck really about whether the laptops look externally the same.
@alon_mizrahi Israelis speaking out against genocide is important, as they can reach places others cant. However, supporting palestinean voices is also important, eg the nazra film festival in october https://t.co/QQpb2IaeFW. One can also possibly help organise screenings where they live.
@mbeisen Luckily, the huge number of cancers that AI has already cured and the fact that it is about to cure all of them in a few months speaks for itself, and we know which of the two scenarios is actually the case.
@mbeisen It is crazy how ridiculous it sounds when the premise is that AI can actually be useful.
So we can deduce that those who wrote the original letter are stupid, say stupid things and we should all laugh at them, or that the premise that AI is used in good ways is wrong.
@dheeraj_nagaraj Thanks for speaking out.
To me, it is not surprising at all that this exactly is the kind of researchers that openai currently attracts into their ranks.
@GrumpyDogma@hilbertspaess This is how AI is gonna kill us, we will have become so stupid that we will not even be able to check an account's post history by ourselves and we will need to ask AI to do everything. Then it is gonna be an easy job.
@HoboJerk@dheeraj_nagaraj@ardan_michel1 Yes, it actually is if you are attacking a genuine account just for being from that region(and obviously genuine one no less).
@Limgrave666@dheeraj_nagaraj Which academic norm didn't he follow? The only thing not following academic norms here is requesting to drop collaborators and threatening people.
