💫 The North-Eastern - Eelam Tamil magazine launched in Jaffna and Batticaloa
A new English-language print magazine has been launched in the Tamil homeland, with events in Jaffna and Batticaloa timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Vaddukoddai Resolution.
The North-Eastern, a quarterly covering politics, arts and culture relevant to Eelam Tamils, was published last month. Both launch events drew lively exchanges between attendees and panellists, among them the publisher B Puthiyavan, based in Mullaitivu, the Tamil editor T Aarani, based in Vavuniya, and the editor-in-chief Mario Arulthas, based in Toronto.
At midnight on 31st May 1981, the prestigious Jaffna Public Library was set ablaze by Sri Lankan security forces and state-sponsored Sinhala mobs. The library housed over 97,000 rare books and manuscripts, positioning it as one of the largest in Asia and the foremost repository of Tamil literature.
This was an act of cultural genocide perpetrated by the Sinhalese against the Tamils. It is no different from what the Nazis did in 1933 with the burning of books in Germany.
Never forget, never forgive!
“Alberta Insight Meditation Centre” has become a safe haven for the glorification of perpetrators of the Tamil genocide.
Several individuals accused of involvement in the Tamil genocide, including Mahinda Rajapaksa, have been sanctioned by Canadian authorities. At the same time, May 18 is annually recognized in Canada as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. Despite this, individuals promoting Sinhala-Buddhist nationalist narratives in Alberta reportedly glorified genocide perpetrators on the very same day.
Such actions stand in direct opposition to Canadian values, including the recognition and remembrance of Tamil genocide and the pursuit of justice for Eelam Tamils.
We call upon diaspora political organizations and elected representatives to take appropriate action regarding this meditation centre, which appears to be deviating from the true purpose of meditation and community harmony. We also urge the Alberta government to investigate individuals and groups alleged to be enabling or promoting genocide glorification.

17 years ago, Sri Lanka carried out a genocidal campaign against the Tamil people. Tens of thousands killed. Hospitals destroyed. Families starved.
I will continue to stand with the Tamil community in the fight for justice. We need genocide recognition, universal jurisdiction, & international accountability.
Honoured that my book Collective Genocidal Intent in Sri Lanka was released yesterday in Chennai by Madras Review People’s Publications.
The work examines atrocities against Eelam Tamils through international criminal law, justice and accountability.
“As a mother, it is my duty to search for my son — a duty that I cannot relinquish.”
For 36 years, Ponmani searched for her 18year old son who was taken away by the Sri Lankan army from Eastern University,Vantharumoolai Batticaloa in 1990 and never seen again.
Despite intimidation, surveillance, and being forced to accept a death certificate, she never stopped believing he would return.
Yesterday, Ponmani passed away without knowing the fate of her son.

17 years today - Soldiers throw grenades into bunkers with surrendering families
As Tamil civilians attempted to surrender to the oncoming Sri Lankan military, many were slaughtered. https://t.co/o1jlMb7gFT
On the 18th May each year, we remember the innocent Tamil men, women and children who lost their lives during the Sri Lankan Civil War and we stand with all those still carrying the pain of loss, displacement and injustice.
Today I spoke in the Parliament of NSW, to recognise the Tamil Genocide.
Prospect Electorate is proudly home to one of the largest Tamil communities in Australia. Our Tamil community has shown extraordinary resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. Through their courage, they refuse to let what was taken become lost, continuing to preserve their language, culture and identity for future generations.
As we remember Mullivaikkal and all those who never made it home, we also honour the strength of survivors.
We remember. We honour. We stand together. And we demand justice for all victims and survivors of the Tamil Genocide.
