The economic and demographic effects of corruption.

Cost of land in our urban areas is far higher than what our GDP per capita would dictate. The ratio of land value to per capita GDP is probably higher in India than anywhere else. As an example, land prices in Chennai or Bengaluru rival that of cities like New York which has a vastly higher per capita GDP.

The key reason?

First, vast sums of political corruption money is parked in real estate. This raises real estate prices and high real estate prices affect everything downstream.

Second, corruption in building approvals and the like - the famous DTCP - raises construction costs, on top of already higher real estate costs.

Third, corruption in private school regulatory compliance enforcement raises school fees.

Fourth, corruption in private hospital regulatory compliance enforcement raises health care costs.

Fifth, household goods need sales outlets and those pay higher rents due to high real estate prices and construction costs.

So housing, education, healthcare and household goods - all of these now cost higher.

As a direct consequence, the economic burden on the average person gets worse. Young people, facing all these costs, postpone marriage, and postpone children or have fewer children.

That directly affects our demographics.

While this issue exists in many parts of India, Tamil Nadu, being the most urbanized of the bigger states, is particularly hit hard.

So corruption is becoming an existential threat to our society.

If you worry about the super-low birth rate in Tamil Nadu, way below replacement, understand that corruption raising our cost of living is one of the major causes, not the only cause, but a big one in our context.

If even a giant tech CEO faces this kind of pressure for speaking about corruption, imagine what ordinary citizens face.

I started @makkal_saatchi to expose bribe patterns anonymously. One person says “shut the portal,” another asks “did you verify?” even after clearly saying it is an anonymous citizen reporting platform.

And honestly, I can’t even imagine what @TVKVijayHQ must have gone through before becoming Chief Minister, standing against this entire ecosystem.

Only the corrupt fear citizens speaking.

தமிழக நெடுஞ்சாலை துறையின் கீழ் வரும் சாலைகள் மூன்று வகையாக பிரிக்கப்படும்.

ஒரு சாலை புதிதாக போடப்பட்டால் அந்த ஒப்பந்ததாரர் அடுத்த 5 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு அந்த சாலையின் பராமரிப்பு பணியை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டும். இதை நெடுஞ்சாலை துறையில் - Defect Liability என்று அழைக்கிறார்கள். எளிமையாக சொன்னால் ஒரு பொருள் வாங்கினால் கொடுக்கப்படும் கியாரண்டி போல.

தமிழகத்தில் உள்ள பெரும்பாலான சாலைகள் புதிய சாலைகளே. இந்நிலையில், இந்த ஆண்டு ஜனவரி மாதம், தமிழகத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்து சாலைகளையும் பராமரிக்க நெடுஞ்சாலைத்துறை அமைச்சர் எ.வ. வேலு உத்தரவில் நெடுஞ்சாலை துறையின் Construction & Maintenance பிரிவின் தலைமை பொறியாளர் சத்யபிரகாஷ் 600 கோடி ரூபாய் மதிப்பில் டெண்டர் விட்டார்.

தமிழகத்தின் சாலைகளில் மொத்தமாக பராமரிப்பு பணிகளை (Patch Works) மேற்கொள்ள எந்த தேவையும் இல்லை. லஞ்சம் வாங்குவதற்காக மட்டும் ஜனவரி 2026 ல் இந்த டெண்டர் விடப்பட்டு 600 கோடியில் 35 சதவிகிதத்தை கமிஷனாக பெற்றார் எ.வ. வேலு. ஒப்பந்ததாரர்களுக்கும் இது வசதி. வேலையே செய்யாமல் எளிதாக வரும் இந்த பணத்துக்காக ஒப்புக்கொண்டு 35 சதவிகித லஞ்சத்தை ஜனவரி மாதம் கொடுத்து விட்டனர்.

நெடுஞ்சாலை பொறியாளர் சத்யபிரகாஷ் Construction & Maintenance பிரிவுக்கு நியமிக்கப்பட வேலுவுக்கு கொடுத்த லஞ்சம் எவ்வளவு தெரியுமா ? 40 கோடி. (ஒரு வருடத்துக்கு. ஒரு வருடம் முடிந்ததும் Top Up செய்ய வேண்டும்). இப்பதவிக்கு வந்ததும், சத்யபிரகாஷ் நெடுஞ்சாலை துறையில் இருந்த 43 மண்டலங்களிலும் தலா 25 லட்ச ரூபாய் வசூல் செய்து முடித்தார்.

இது போக, தனக்கு வசூல் செய்து தருவதற்கென்றே, ஒரு தலைமை பொறியாளரை பதவி அளித்து நெடுஞ்சாலை துறையில் வைத்திருந்தார் வேலு. சந்திரசேகர் என்ற தலைமை பொறியாளர் இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே ஓய்வு பெற்று விட்டார். அவரை Senior Technical Officer என்ற பதவியில் நியமனம் செய்து, தனக்கு வசூல் செய்து தருவதற்காகாவே பிரத்யேகமாக வைத்திருந்தார். @evvelu .

இதுபோல தோண்ட தோண்ட ஒவ்வொரு துறையிலும் ஊழல் புகார்கள் வந்துகொண்டே இருக்கின்றன.

Makkal Saatchi was built as an anonymous bribe-reporting portal for citizens to safely report everyday corruption.

It is not a court. It is not a final judgment portal. A submitted report is not treated as proof or accusation. It is only a citizen-submitted signal that needs verification.

Clear disclaimer, privacy policy, and terms are already added. The main purpose is to expose corruption patterns, repeated departments, locations, methods, and amounts not to shame anyone unfairly.

Because the platform is anonymous, anyone can submit anything. That risk exists. That is exactly why fake, repeated, personal, political, or unverifiable complaints are filtered/removed whenever identified.

The goal is not social media drama. The goal is responsible public-interest reporting.

I have tried my best to take this to the government and push for official integration, verification, routing, and action tracking. Sadly, a lot of my time has gone in waiting, follow-ups, and missed chances. Still, I am open to working with the right official system.

If someone feels a report is fake, don’t treat it as truth. Leave it, question it, or ask for verification. That is fair.

But please don’t ignore the bigger issue: everyday bribery is real, and citizens need a safe way to report it.
