@thesundaysport This is a bit niche, but Jonathan Powell and Lord Mandelson are both inside a rather noxious "elite" club that promotes Chinese trade.
Their positions around Chagos (handing billions to a China ally and ownership of a base), is maybe, possibly sketchy as fk.
Just like a silly non-binding ICJ advisory opinion doesn't obligate the UK to give up the Chagos, it doesn't obligate them to sanction and boycott Israel.

Oh dear. Has anybody checked on David Lammy? Addressing Parliament in 2024, the then-foreign secretary made American approval central to his case for betrayal, which involved handing over the strategically valuable Chagos Islands to Mauritius and paying them for the privilege.
The White House, State Department and Pentagon all backed it, Lammy crowed. This saw him through for a while: when the treaty was signed in May 2025, the Government again emphasised that it enjoyed “strong support from the US”.
Ben Judah, then Lammy’s special adviser at the foreign office, who worked on the deal – if we can call unnecessary surrender a “deal” – expended much energy in defending it. According to him, an American official confided: “The only way the United Kingdom can actually hurt the United States would be by not doing the deal.”
Really? Oops. Somebody had better check on Judah, too. On Tuesday, Donald Trump dramatically poured cold water on the act of national self-harm, for which Labour has been gagging for years, branding it “ridiculous”, leaving Andy Burnham sitting helplessly beside him like a gazumped estate agent...

What next - reparations for having London as our capital city (the problem is who would we pay)?
Keir Starmer is long-time good friends with Philippe Sands who became counsel for Chagos to Mauritius in 2010.
Before he was even an MP in 2013, Starmer held discussions about the future of Chagos with Prime Minister Ramgoolam in Mauritius.
In 2019, Sands obtains an advisory only non-binding ruling in the International Court Of Justice (ICJ) that Chagos should be given to Mauritius.
In July 2024, Starmer becomes Prime Minister and ten weeks later announces he's agreed to give Chagos to Mauritius.
In May 2025, Starmer and Ramgoolam sign the Chagos Treaty in London.
In January this year, Starmer's Attorney General, and another close friend, Lord Hermer explains to a UN conference at Wetminster, "A part of our commitment, an aspect of that commitment, is demonstrated by our support for the International Court of Justice, where we have accepted its compulsory jurisdiction.
"The ICJ, as the world's Apex Court, demonstrates how International Law can help states address the defining challenges of our era."
Close friends, Starmer, Hermer and Sands set out to give Chagos away as quicky as possible, and to hell with constitutional hierarchy, and any other impediments to their plan.
