This post is to bring to your kind attention India’s present massive public health crisis: head injury, with an estimated 1.5 to 2 million people suffering annually and over 100,000 to 150,000 deaths each year, making India one of the countries with the highest head injury burdens in the world. Of these, about 60% of all head injuries are attributed to road traffic accidents, frequently involving two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. A global burden of disease study found that over a quarter of the world’s trauma deaths occur in India, of which 80% were caused by RTA.
In India, female motorised two-wheeler users involved in road traffic accidents account for 70,000 injuries and fatalities annually. Not surprisingly, a recent publication highlighted a noticeable gender difference; when comparing the prevalence of HI between males and females, the prevalence among females (91.1 per 1,000 population, 95% CI: 7.4 to 245.1 per 1,000 population) was found to be slightly higher than that among males (85.1 per 1,000 population, 95% CI: 3.2 to 252.5 per 1,000 population).
Helmet-use awareness among women in India remains low, especially among pillion riders. While women driving scooters or motorcycles show higher compliance in some urban areas, female pillion riders rarely wear helmets. Many women sit with both legs on one side of the bike. This posture reduces balance, increasing the risk of slipping and falling over speed bumps or during sudden turns.
We do have laws mandating helmets for both riders and pillion riders; still, acceptance among women is very low due to social hesitations, especially in rural areas. We need massive social reform to raise awareness among women about mandatory helmet use.
Women’s road safety is not a women-only responsibility. Brothers, families, motorists and society all have a role to play in creating a road environment where women can travel without fear or unnecessary risk.
I believe that despite the unique diversity of our country, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Bhuj to Gangtok, the most appealing aspect of this country is the emotional connection our citizens have to our social values and our country. On 28th August, we will celebrate Raksha Bandhan, a unique festival known for its legacy and history, where brothers take an oath to protect their sisters at all odds. This Raksha Bandhan, that promise can take on a wider social meaning by focusing on the safety of women who travel every day on two-wheelers, whether as riders or pillion passengers.
Hence, on this occasion, I request you to appeal to all brothers celebrating this festival to give their sisters a helmet for their safety on the roads, with the pledge: "I promise my sister’s safe return home after every two-wheeler journey." Because every sister deserves not only a brother who promises to protect her, but to helps her return home safely. It will encourage responsible riding, respect traffic rules, discourage speeding and reckless driving, and ensure that when she travels on the roads, her safety comes first.
This Raksha Bandhan,
“Is Raksha Bandhan, Rakhi ke saath ek aur sankalp- Behen ki har journey safe banane ka.” Let Protection Become a Promise to ensure sisters’ safe journeys.
The message delivered by the highest authorities of our country for this social campaign will definitely have a significant impact on our social values around helmet use, making it a new social norm, and I personally believe it will become the greatest helmet aareness campaign in the world and in history.
