@Noahpinion In Greg Bear's "Anvil of the Stars," the characters discover footage in which alien lifeforms had breakdown in social order and then ritualistically tried and then massacred all members of one of the "sexes"
This is absolutely hilarious.
Rufo defended "meritocracy" when it was about Black vs. White, but ridiculed and denounced "meritocracy" when it was about White vs. Indian
🤣🤣🤣
@davideoks That being said, the OSAT companies are all either US or E. Asia so ultimate point still stands.
Also, it seems to me that just bc hyperscalers' acts indicate belief in AGI opportunity, doesn't mean they're *right* - "Manias, Panics & Crashes" is eternal theme of history
@davideoks Hi, big fan of your writing, watched below w/ interest. Some (slight) quibbles: SE Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia & Vietnam are major sites for OSAT facilities & so are benefitting that way.
David Oks: What does AGI mean for poor countries
@DougJBalloon@Tyler_A_Harper Data Colada are among the following who kicked off the replication revolution (by drawing attention to the replication crisis).
They've caught numerous instances of research fraud and helped to vastly improve understanding of and discourse on how to interpret research results
@KP_Show You think Collins was hurt? Before he got put on IR, he somehow seems to look worse than last year (perhaps bc needs to learn new scheme?) ? Also what is CJ West's deal...?
@SteveMillerOC Texas is an overlooked tech hub, especially for semiconductors (TI, Samsung, AMD, etc.), but I think most people aren't aware of that and so would laugh at you including "Texas companies" - but it's definitely true!
Alleged research misconduct by Sabine Kastner, and silencing whistleblowers by the psychology department at Princeton Univeristy.
Multiple former members of the Kastner Lab at Princeton University, including former postdocs and graduate students, have formally reported research misconduct by Professor Sabine Kastner, including alleged data falsification spanning over 20 years.
They describe a culture where people feared speaking up. Some remained anonymous because they feared retaliation.
My own experience: after I raised concerns, I was removed from Kastner lab. I was explicitly told by the psychology department leadership that this happened because I raised concerns anonymously: they told me “you questioned her integrity. PNI is a community. You attack one of us, you attack all of us.”
Afterward, I could not secure a new adviser and my PhD enrollment was terminated through the “no active adviser” rule.
Many affected trainees were international students. Losing an adviser means losing visa status, and international relocation, creating enormous pressure not to report concerns. This is exactly why Kastner lab recruits a disproportionately high number of international trainees. And why the lab website has most former members erased.
The research involved is supported by active NIH grants of over $20m. Involved publications include papers in Science, Nature Neuroscience, and Neuron.
The departmental leadership has been complicit, by helping remove students who raised concerns instead of protecting them.
Over the coming weeks, I will post documents, timelines, and evidence so people can examine the facts themselves.

Industrial catastrophe happens fast.
Industrial renewal happens slowly, if at all.
Time for the US and Europe to make common cause with Asian democracies on maintaining healthy industrial bases protected from PRC dumping.
“Allied scale” is the only way out.
@matthewgmccabe@jaycaspiankang while also losing some sleep about what I will do if my kids aren't able to get into a competitive major at a top-50 college
@matthewgmccabe@jaycaspiankang ...takes away from the intense practice that is absolutely necessary to score 800 on Math SAT and 5 on AP Calc Exam. All of the above is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but as a tech professional myself I dream about the day that I can discuss New Yorker reads with my kids...
@dr_duchesne@herandrews Do you have comparable statistics for each ethnic/racial group? from what i can tell the degree of cheating/faking within competitive academics/admissions in general is undersold, and US is not immune to this (in fact, the US focus on "softer" admissions criteria encourages this)
