Just. Wow. As we went over Mexico and the U.S. this morning, I caught this sprite.

Sprites are TLEs or Transient Luminous Events, that happen above the clouds and are triggered by intense electrical activity in the thunderstorms below. We have a great view above the clouds, so scientists can use these types of pictures to better understand the formation, characteristics, and relationship of TLEs to thunderstorms.

very few people understand that r1 is a massive game-changer.

it absolutely demolishes the narrative that scaling = burning obscene amounts of cash, which was basically the moat for hyperscalers. startups can now compete with models tailored to niche problems, iterate faster, & avoid being locked into openai/anthropic/google ecosystems.

the fact that a chinese team dropped this bomb just underscores how asymmetric the playing field has become. imagine building highly specific models without the existential terror of opex spiraling out of control. it’s basically taking the “foundational model hegemony” & slicing it up into affordable, adaptable chunks.

rn, startups can actually own their stack again. this is decentralization but on a terrifyingly efficient trajectory.
