This weekend, there was a baby shower I wasn’t invited to.

Some of the people there are among my closest friends. We’re making plans for the festivals ahead. So when I found out, I said, “F it.” I tried to mean it.

A friend asked me how I was managing to stay so calm.

At 2 a.m., I called my husband. And I cried and cried and cried.

It wasn’t because I desperately wanted to go to a party. It was because I couldn’t stop asking myself: Would I have been invited if I’d kept my miscarriage quiet?

These are Indian friends. I know how miscarriage can still be spoken about in whispers in our communities, as though a woman’s loss is something awkward, something to keep out of sight. I don’t want to believe that’s what happened here. I want there to be another explanation. I truly do.

I don’t know why I wasn’t asked. Perhaps someone thought an invitation would hurt me. They might even have been right. I may have said no. I may have wanted to go, then found on the day that I couldn’t.

But I wish somebody had trusted me to decide.

After a miscarriage, so much happens without your consent. Your body changes. Your plans disappear. A future you had begun to picture is suddenly spoken of in the past tense. The small decisions you can still make matter more than people realise.

I can celebrate someone else’s baby while grieving mine. I can say “f it” to someone’s face and still fall apart when I get home. Both are true.

I spoke publicly about my miscarriage because pretending it never happened felt unbearable. I never imagined I might end up wondering whether telling the truth had made me harder to include.

Please invite the woman who has lost her baby. Let her say no if she needs to. Let her say yes if she wants to.

Just don’t make her loss the reason she has to find out the party happened without her.
