🔍 What can we learn from mapping and evaluating incentive-based approaches across Tanzania, and how can these insights be leveraged to strengthen coastal stewardship?

In Tanzania, incentive-based approaches are used to support more sustainable small-scale marine fisheries and protect vital coastal ecosystems.

📘 A new report developed by Sustain East Africa in collaboration with the International Institute for Environment and Development (@IIED), under the WorldFish-led Asia–Africa BlueTech Superhighway (AABS) program explores these questions.

This new report sheds light on both opportunities and gaps in current approaches – including the need for better documentation of impacts, greater recognition for cultural drivers and stronger governance in community-based financing initiatives.

🌊 A significant step forward for Kenya’s aquaculture sector

Homa Bay County officially signed its first Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Policy on Nov 21 in conjunction with #WorldFisheriesDay2025 - developed through extensive collaboration between communities, county leadership and technical support from WorldFish.

The three-year policy sets out clear measures to modernize fisheries, grow sustainable aquaculture and boost the sector as means for economic development and job creation in the county.

Homa Bay holds the largest share of #Kenya's Lake Victoria Waters, a key contributor to national fish production. The sector however, faced persistent challenges - which the new policy strives to change.

Homa Bay County Gladys Wanga said the country aims to unlock the full potential of their aquatic resources while safeguarding the integrity of Lake Victoria.

WorldFish Senior Scientist Dr. Rahma Adam said the policy connects science to action and impact, noting that the model approach could benefit other counties and fishing communities in Kenya.

As the policy moves into implementation, #WorldFish will continue working with Homa Bay County, producer groups, researchers, and partners.
