A rare picture. Look closely. ! folded mountains, shola forests, and rolling grasslands, with a herd of Nilgiri Tahr standing guard over their kingdom. We are looking at one of the last remaining habitats of these majestic Mountain Monarchs & this landscape is a living symbol of the fragile shola-grassland ecosystem. On World Veterinary Day 2026, themed “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food & Health”, NDDB commemorated the occasion with a focused session, highlighting the vital role of veterinarians in safeguarding both food systems and public health.
The programme featured address by Dr. @ShahMeenesh, Chairman, NDDB, who extended his greetings to veterinarians across NDDB, its subsidiaries, and the dairy cooperative network. In his message, he highlighted the relevance of this year's theme, emphasising veterinarians as critical guardians of both livestock health and food safety, ensuring safe, contaminant-free milk reaches millions of households. He noted that while India’s global leadership in milk production stands strong, the future of the sector rests on sustainability, quality, and safety—areas where veterinarians play a central role.
Stressing the One Health approach, Dr Shah pointed out the interconnectedness of animal, human, and environmental health, and the vital role veterinarians play in early disease detection, surveillance, and prevention of zoonotic risks. He also drew attention to emerging challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and evolving disease patterns, urging responsible use of antibiotics, stronger preventive care, and adoption of science-based practices. Reaffirming NDDB’s commitment, he highlighted ongoing efforts to empower veterinarians through training, digital tools, and institutional support, envisioning a future where every veterinarian is equipped, respected, and enabled as a true guardian of health.
Experts from NDDB’s Animal Nutrition, Breeding, and Health groups highlighted key priorities—milk quality and food safety, farmer empowerment through breeding tools, and responsible antimicrobial use to combat AMR—followed by an open forum encouraging dialogue and exchange of ideas. The programme reinforced the importance of veterinary expertise in strengthening dairy systems and ensuring safe, nutritious milk for all.
Much like human babies growing inside their mother’s womb, mangrove seedlings begin life while still attached to the mother tree, a process called viviparous germination. These tiny life forms, known as propagules, grow and develop before they even fall, and when they do, they float across waters for days, sometimes weeks, carrying with them the incredible ability to take root wherever they land. The propagules consist of a stem-like structure with a bulbous cap and a small crown of embryonic leaves. Mangroves are superheroes in the fight against climate change and serve as symbols of resilience and adaptation. #Mangroves #TNForest #Climateaction

What we release into the environment returns to us in the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe.
We can heal the planet through a One Health approach, which recognizes that the health of humans, animals & ecosystems depend on each other.
