Metagenomics + Frontier AI = Protection against new threats? Not quite, imo.
Wrote a response to @Simon__Grimm 's fantastic @IFP essay on scaling pathogen detection. The architecture is right. The input layer is missing/non-trivial. (1/7)
CDC's wastewater surveillance detects pathogens 2 weeks after spillovers. Yet everyone in biosecurity is building faster, cheaper, more sensitive tests. They're solving the wrong problem.
The bottleneck isn't detection. It's sampling & concentration (& incentive alignment). (1/n)
@paulg That everyone is building better tech to detect stuff in sputum, but processing the sputum to get it ready for testing is still pretty oldschool
@ringostarrmusic TIL you had TB when you were 12 and used the hospital time to learn drumming! Lucky for you (& us!). 1.5 million people still die of TB every year, and 40% aren't even diagnosed. Tell us your story! (We're making $2 tools to test people at their home) #WorldTBDay
@BUGSSlab Do you currently have benches/space available for rent? We're looking for lab space and are trying to sign up for your membership/entrepreneur program
@pmarca We're building local entrepreneurship opportunities for community workers, right into our community centric Dx products + a real-time public dashboard for locals to know and pursue the state of diseases. Different from government "provided" centralized Dx.
