It’s time to break the circle:
We Somalis must break free from the cycle of aid dependency that has plagued our nation for too long. Sixty percent of our population relies on humanitarian assistance, a situation perpetuated by the interests of foreign aid cartels. It's time to reclaim our dignity and chart a new course.
Key reforms include:
Building strong institutions:
Establish robust governance structures led by competent leaders.
Transitioning from aid:
Develop a clear plan for the gradual transfer of humanitarian responsibilities from international organizations to the Somali government.
Data sovereignty:
Take control of our own data by expelling external data collection institutions like SWALIM.
Economic self-sufficiency:
Allocate sufficient resources to the production sector to stimulate economic growth and create jobs.
Addressing displacement:
Develop new villages in each state and construct affordable housing to end the displacement of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The current aid model is inefficient, with excessive funds diverted to administrative costs and consulting fees. We must prioritize direct support for our people and their needs.
Furthermore, Somali NGOs should transition into companies to create sustainable jobs and contribute to the economy. Building fake toilets and distributing plastic bags, handwash soaps ….is not a long-term solution to our challenges.
It is time for us to embrace self-reliance, strengthen our institutions, and create a brighter future for all our citizens.
As a deadlier strain of #mpox spreads to multiple African countries, @WHO, @AfricaCDC, local governments and partners are further scaling up the response to interrupt disease transmission. But more funding and support for a comprehensive response are needed.
I am considering convening an International Health Regulations Emergency Committee to advise me on whether the outbreak of mpox should be declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
Thank you @sciencecohen for spotlighting this important and urgent issue.

Mogadishu needs urgent mass first aid training for everyone, esp. for blast injuries. What can people do before medics arrive to safely save lives and prevent disabilities? Death and major disabilities can be reduced with basic first aid knowledge #MogadishuFirstAid
The enviable emergent civic culture in Mogadishu is heartening. This is exemplified by the inter-regional soccer games in Mogadishu which is attracting unprecedented record. About 64K fans attended the Jubaland vs. Galmudug game. The Southwest vs. Banadir region also pulled in 58K fans. What is equally impressive is that tickets are sold online and there is no paper ticket. Somalis, pioneers in cashless transactions in Africa, are also attempting to run a completely cashless civic culture and economy. Call this the rising of the sphinx of today out of the ashes of yesteryears.
What we are witnessing is a sign of the youth of Somalia yearning for peace, public safety, and the general welfare of their country. This is indeed a country wanting to enhance its culture of peace and prosperity.
Somalia is at peace with her neighbours but one of her neighbours does not beleive in peace dividens. PP of Addis Ababa is at war with itself and with its neighbours and that is a problem. Someone must contain it.
See the peaceful crow here.
