HEALTH IN FOCUS 🇷🇼 | Specialist surgical missions bringing advanced care to Rwanda
Over the past few months, specialists from the UK’s Royal College, working alongside Rwanda Legacy of Hope(@RWALegacyofHope )and the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), have contributed to expanding access to specialized surgical care in Rwanda.
In September, a week-long ENT surgical mission screened 50 patients with complex conditions that might otherwise have required transfer abroad. The mission also provided hands-on training to local specialists and resident doctors.
More recently, a week-long neurosurgical mission saw 15 complex cases operated on, while creating further opportunities for practical training and knowledge-sharing with Rwanda’s healthcare professionals.
Beyond the numbers, these missions bring specialized expertise closer to patients, help address surgical waiting lists, and strengthen the skills of local medical teams to deliver advanced care.
For Rwanda, the impact extends beyond the operating theatre: more access to specialized treatment today and stronger local surgical capacity for the future.

In 2026, following a May 2025 assessment, Rwanda’s National Tuberculosis (TB) Reference Laboratory in Kigali was designated a @WHO Supranational Reference Laboratory (SRL), making it #Africa's 5th fully operational SRL and the 33rd globally.
This recognition strengthens Rwanda’s role in advancing high-quality TB diagnosis and improving the region’s response to the disease.
As part of the WHO SRL network, #Rwanda will expand its technical support to countries across the region, building on its work with #Comoros and #Madagascar.
The designation also opens doors to stronger scientific collaboration, research, and access to new technologies, helping build laboratory capacity and improve #TB diagnosis and care across Africa.

"Living intentionally means deciding that our circumstances will not completely control our character, our dreams, or our future. It means asking ourselves: What kind of person do I want to become? What am I doing today that will help me become that person tomorrow?"
"Living intentionally does not mean having a perfect life. It means making conscious choices even when life is difficult. It means choosing discipline over distraction, hope over hopelessness, growth over comparison, and purpose over simply following the crowd."

Can #HealthTaxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages protect health and strengthen public resources?
Such taxes are among the most effective ways to reduce consumption of unhealthy products while also generating government revenue.
WHO is calling on countries to join the 3 by 35 Initiative, which advocates for countries to increase the real prices of tobacco, alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages by at least 50% through health taxes by 2035.
The initiative aims to reduce the burden of noncommunicable diseases while generating additional domestic resources that can support health and development priorities.
Join the last of our five virtual #RC77 side events to hear experiences from across the Western Pacific on health tax modelling, revenue allocation and how countries can address concerns around illicit trade without weakening the case for public health action.
Learn from country experiences, challenges and lessons that can help advance effective health tax policies.

#Rwanda_Perioperative_HealthCare_Strategic_Plan_2026_2030 is officially launched. Thank you Hon. Minister @nsanzimanasabin@RwandaHealth for making this happen.
This strategic plan follows and builds on #RwandaNSOAP 2018-2024. It marks an important milestone in strengthening further and advancing surgery, anesthesia, perioperative nursing, critical care and all support services in Rwanda. It provides a clear framework for improving workforce, service delivery, quality, safety, accessibility, financing and efficiency of perioperative services over the next five years.
The successful implementation of this plan will require strong collaboration among healthcare professionals, institutions, partners, policymakers, and the general public.
Together, we can build a stronger, safer, and more responsive surgical and perioperative healthcare system for #Rwanda.
Thank u @Surgical_RW@Uni_Rwanda@ughe_org@GSRHRwanda@operationsmile@OpSmileRwanda and everyone who contributed...
We only have to remember that " the best plan remains a plan till fully implemented"✅️ THE JOB STARTS NOW!

Today, MSFC Rwanda joined partners, in Celebration of International Safe Abortion Day 2026 in Karongi District.
Through dialogue, performances and shared experiences, we highlighted the importance of accurate information, respectful care and access to quality #SRHR services.
Today, we took the conversation to @Uni_Rwanda, Remera Campus. We listened, answered questions, and engaged with students to better understand their experiences.
