The Tragic Rape and Murder of Simboo Birhanu

The cruelty and depravity exhibited by Abiy Ahmed and his soldiers have long surpassed the bounds of comprehension. On mere accusation of supporting the OLA, they have carried out executions of countless young boys, including the young Amanuel, whose family was forced to witness this heinous act. They have thrown boys suspected of supporting the OLA into burial pits while still alive; buried others up to their necks and left them to suffer, and set people ablaze while they were still breathing. They have hanged individuals alive, killed them, and burned their bodies. Among the most abhorrent of their actions are also the despicable acts of sexual violence perpetrated against women and girls.

This tragic fate has now befallen Simboo Birhanu, a 10-year-old. She was ONLY 10 and was subjected to unspeakable violence—raped, killed, and her lifeless body hanged from a tree. Abiy Ahmed and the soldiers under his command are a profound affront to humanity itself.

Another saddest aspect of the story is that, despite overwhelming past and present evidence pointing to Abiy's soldiers as the perpetrators, even the victims' families are too afraid to speak out. All they have been able to say so far is that "she was killed and found in a place frequently visited by soldiers; they suspect them but cannot say for certain."

Folks, outrage is a natural first reaction but far from enough. We have only one option: to fight back and reclaim our dignity and humanity. We fight Abiy Ahmed for the sake of both.
