Today marks the International Women's Day, but we at the Weizmann Institute strive for gender equality in science every day. One of our proudest initiatives is "Women's Postdoctoral Career Development Award in Science" - a program open for women PhD graduates of all institutions in Israel who are going abroad to continue their studies.
The statistics - as explained by Prof. Idit Shachar, Head of the Office for the Advancement of Women in Science and Gender Equality at the Weizmann Institute - shows that very few women pursue postdoctoral studies abroad, a critical stage in their academic career. Therefore, our innovative program provides a financial grant for their third year of postdoctoral studies, as well as career coaching for the duration of their stay.
"Actually we lose great minds in the journey from the Phd student to become a professor," says Prof. Shachar. "It is our job to help them during their doctoral and postdoctoral studies, and we do this in different ways - the academy in Israel needs them."
