Amit Shah sets 2029 deadline to dismantle India’s drug trade
The Centre has set December 31, 2029 as the target to collectively uproot the drug trade from India, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah calling for a shift from seizure-based enforcement to dismantling the networks, finances and digital links that sustain narcotics trafficking.
Inaugurating the third National Conference of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) heads of States and Union Territories in New Delhi, Shah said the fight against drugs must now move from “Meeting to Mission, Reporting to Result, Seizure to the dismantling of Networks, and Case to Conviction”.
The two-day conference, organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), brings together ANTF heads from all 36 States and UTs, along with representatives of government departments and other stakeholders. Its focus is the implementation of the Vision Document on Narcotics Control 2026-29, which sets more than 100 targets across four pillars: enforcement, intelligence and operations; precursor and synthetic drug control; demand and harm reduction; and capacity building and coordination.
The emphasis marks a broader attempt to move beyond measuring anti-drug action through seizures. Shah said agencies must focus on dismantling entire cartels, tracing their finances and identifying digital links, while conducting both backward and forward investigations. He outlined a three-level approach targeting drug networks at the entry point, interstate distribution system and local sales networks in districts. Districts, in turn, will be classified as manufacturing or entry points, transportation corridors or consumption centres.
The strategy also seeks to respond to newer forms of trafficking involving synthetic drugs, precursor chemicals, clandestine laboratories, darknet markets, cryptocurrency and international networks. The conference has dedicated technical sessions to dismantling network linkages and cartels, synthetic drugs and clan labs, illicit cultivation, and darknet and crypto investigations.
Shah said the ANTFs should evolve into an “Anti-Narco Mission Command”, with State Chief Secretaries ensuring that manpower, technology, budgets and other resources are aligned to the drug-control mission. He also stressed the need to strengthen forensic and technology capabilities and make the conversion of every piece of ANTF information into actionable intelligence part of the regular police work culture.
The enforcement push is being paired with prevention and demand-reduction measures. Against a target of one lakh Nashamukt Mitras, 46,780 have so far been registered across ministries. These volunteers are expected to reach 10 lakh schools, colleges and institutions, where they will engage with young people and sensitise campus authorities about the risks of drug abuse.
Shah also called for greater use of financial investigations, stronger coordination with prosecutors from investigation through conviction, action against foreign accused present in India and efforts to bring fugitives supplying drugs from abroad before Indian courts. He said border points and production centres would have to be secured to close loopholes in the supply chain.
The conference also saw the launch of anti-narcotics awareness TV commercials and the revamped NCB website, while foundation stones were laid for new NCB zonal complexes in Lucknow and Dehradun. The best-performing State and UT ANTFs were also recognised.
The larger objective is to establish a coordinated, whole-of-government system in which the NCB, State and UT ANTFs and other agencies work against trafficking networks while simultaneously addressing prevention, rehabilitation and harm reduction. The three-year roadmap is therefore designed to turn the existing institutional framework into measurable targets, timelines and accountability ahead of the 2029 deadline.

As India marked its 80th Independence Day, it was also a moment to reflect on how dramatically the way we communicate has evolved over eight decades.
This journey - from the print-led public discourse of a newly independent India in 1947 to today’s instant, participatory and algorithm-driven communication landscape - is the theme of Dr Navneet Anand, our director's chapter, “Political Communication in India: From Independence to the Age of Instagram,” published in Springer Nature’s Understanding Communication: Concepts, Contexts and Contemporary Practices.
A fitting academic reflection as India completes 80 years of its democratic journey.
Congratulations to Dr Anand, on this significant contribution to the field.

Our research reaches the stars. 🌟
We, at Gauhati University, are proud to share that Mr. Ali Hasan Sheikh, a Ph.D. scholar at Gauhati University and DST-INSPIRE Fellow, is the first author of a landmark study reporting the discovery of a Blue Straggler Star caught in the act of formation, providing direct observational evidence for a stellar process that astronomers have theorised for decades.
Along with Prof. Biman J. Medhi and Dr. Hitendra Sarkar, and in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and international partners, the team used NASA's TESS mission and the ESO's Very Large Telescope to study a binary star system about 9,500 light-years away, where one star is actively transferring mass to its companion, rejuvenating it.
Congratulations to the entire team for the feat! 🔭
