Your government’s legal mandate ended.

You gave yourself an extra year.

You concocted an electoral framework that serves your own interests.

You gerrymandered the electoral process, and your winners are known beforehand.

What you are doing is beyond a farce. You know that, and the world knows it too.

The fact that your team cannot face Somalis in a free and fair election says a great deal about your political fate.

Democracy is not merely about telling people to participate. It first requires a legitimate government, agreed rules, an independent electoral commission, a level playing field, and a credible vote.

Without those, participation is not democracy — it is simply participation in a predetermined outcome.

Revealing the True Somali Population

Somalis are often said to number only 15 to 20 million, but this is far from accurate. The Somali people are the largest Somali-speaking population in the Horn of Africa, spread across Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, and a global diaspora.

Even Somalia alone, following decades of population growth, should have at least 30 million people. When all Somali communities are included, the total population of the Somali nation is realistically 50 to 70 million, making it one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa.

This is not just about numbers. It reflects the demographic weight, cultural presence, and historical significance of the Somali people in the Horn of Africa and beyond. Recognizing the true size of the Somali nation is essential for political representation, national pride, and the dignity of Somali identity.

We’re not just guessing scholars have done research, and more studies are still underway to confirm these figures

Mr. President, @HassanSMohamud,

The communiqué issued by your government and the splinter group of the opposition has the following three messages:

1. You will accept the revision of only five articles across four chapters of the new constitution..

2. You will keep the three legislations—the Electoral Law, the Political Parties Law, and the Election Commission Law—along with your current commissioners. This effectively implies a term extension, as these laws cannot be implemented within eight months.

3. You intend to engage with a splinter group of the opposition while avoiding or ignoring the broader opposition, including the Presidents of Puntland and Jubbaland.

Mr. President,,

Let me be blunt.

The country must have a single, agreed-upon constitution. You abandoned it. It is time for you and your government to fully return to the 2012 Provisional Constitution. Picking and choosing provisions will not work. The four chapters changed many articles—including those on political settlement, levels of government, and resource sharing—through a sham process. Simply put, what is the constitution of the country?

Mr. President,

Your government has failed to complete the necessary groundwork for direct elections that are not based on the 4.5 formula, such as establishing security in the country and conducting a population census. No matter how the government rhetoric presents it, unfortunately #Somalia will once again use the 4.5 power-sharing and indirect elections.

Mr. President,

Neither the 2024 gerrymandered and poorly designed Electoral Law nor the one-sided Election Commission will serve the interests of the Somali people. This is a power grab.

Therefore, in my view, your government must negotiate with the opposition on an indirect election model. In addition to adhering to the 4.5 clan power-sharing model, the 2026 dispensation must meet the following criteria: inclusivity, feasibility, no gatekeepers (FGS & FMS), increased voter participation, and political agreement.

Mr. President,

Unfortunately, the personalized rule, misplaced priorities, and poor decisions and choices of your government have squandered time, resources, and opportunities. Your mandate is ending. You have only eight months left to at least leave the Third Republic in the same condition you found it in 2022. The sooner action is taken, the better it will be for Somalia.

Mr. President,

In short, the solution to the crisis is to fully return to the 2012 constitution and engage in negotiations with opposition leaders, Federal Member States (FMS) leaders not affiliated with your party, and other stakeholders in good faith for a timely dispensation in or around May 2026. This approach will help #Somalia avoid parallel political projects and illegal
extensions.

Dear fellow citizens,

I extend my deepest appreciation to the honorable and principled Members of Parliament who have stood by me in challenging the flagrant violations of parliamentary procedure committed by the Speaker of the House of the People. It is evident that the Speaker is acting under undue influence from the President, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Planning, the Minister of Education, the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Governor of the Central Bank - officials who have engaged in egregious breaches of public trust and fiduciary duty, making them the most corrupt administration in Somalia’s history.

These distinguished legislators have demonstrated unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, constitutional integrity, transparency, and good governance - principles that the current regime has systematically eroded. Their dedication to legislative oversight and accountability stands as a bulwark against the entrenched culture of impunity that has plagued our institutions.

Meanwhile, 10 Members of Parliament from my constituency, rather than standing for justice, have chosen to appease the Speaker of the House and the President - both of whom previously marginalized our community by downgrading our share in the Federal Government’s 4.5 power-sharing system from a Cabinet position A to Cabinet position D. Now, in a clear act of political retaliation, they have moved to vacate my parliamentary seat on politically motivated grounds. This brazen attempt to silence me will not deter my resolve to serve and defend the rights of all Somali citizens.

My oversight investigations have uncovered widespread malfeasance and financial misappropriation in virtually every government project, irrespective of the funding source - whether from the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada, or Japan. No donor funds have been shielded from systemic embezzlement, mismanagement, and illicit diversion for personal gain. The only significant step toward accountability thus far has been the decision by U.S. President Donald J. Trump to suspend all foreign aid to Somalia, a move that underscores the urgency of comprehensive anti-corruption reforms. I urge other donor nations to follow this precedent and condition any future assistance on strict financial oversight and institutional transparency.

In the coming days, I will be releasing substantive evidence detailing the misappropriation of public funds by the Speaker, Deputy Speakers, Permanent Secretary, and Whip of the House of the People - officials who have willfully abused their positions and treated legislative funds as their personal treasury. These revelations will enable the Somali people to exercise their sovereign right to demand justice and determine the fate of the 11th Parliament in its remaining term.

My allegiance remains steadfast to the people of Somalia. From Zeila to Ras Kamboni, I will persist in my fight for justice, accountability, and the restoration of the rule of law. I will never waver in this pursuit, even at the cost of my own life. The sovereignty, dignity, and future of Somalia are worth defending with every measure of my strength.

Reports today indicate that Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is heading to Addis Ababa to meet Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

This is a grave mistake.

Ten months ago, the president was detained in Addis while attending the AU Summit. Throughout 2024, Ethiopia and Abiy schemed to dismember Somalia and annex its sea and land. They haven’t stopped.

Less than a month ago, Abiy stalled the Ankara negotiations for seven hours, objecting to the inclusion of the phrase “Somalia’s unity will be respected” in the communiqué.

Now, the Turkish president is reportedly planning visits to Ethiopia and Somalia to mediate and normalize relations, expected in Addis and Mogadishu within days or weeks.

So why rush to Addis now—a country actively scheming against Somalia? Doesn’t the opinion of the Somali people matter? These are the same people who stood by you. Why throw them under the bus?

Abiy and his deep state know how to manipulate and push their interests. They’re creating a wedge between you and your people, setting you up for betrayal once they have you exposed.

What is wrong with you? Why can’t you read the room?

Somalia has built strong allies like Egypt, Djibouti, and Eritrea, who stuck their necks out for Somalia and for you as a leader. They risked and strained their relationships with Ethiopia and Abiy’s enablers—those who wish ill for Somalia. Are you throwing that all away too?

Why act as though nothing has happened? This is the same Ethiopia that sought to seize Somalia’s seas 500 years ago, still wants them now, and will likely want them 500 years from today.

The irony is that you and your officials privately admit to Somalis that their worst fears about Abiy’s intentions are true—nothing has changed.

Instead of engaging with Abiy, focus on making peace with other Somalis. Go to Puntland and assist in their fight against ISIS. Provide them with some of the resources the world has given to Somalia to tackle this terror group. Reconcile with Mogadishu politicians, including the two former presidents, past prime ministers, and opposition MPs. Make peace with Jubaland. That’s how Somalia can move forward, enabling elections and an agreed-upon constitution.

You have real internal issues to address—issues that can be solved. Yet, you seem to be chasing a mirage: Ethiopia is a rational state with two clear objectives—to keep Somalia destabilized and to seize its sea. You have said this yourself over the past twelve months. Have you forgotten?

Mr. President, Abiy is an intelligence officer, and he is entrapping you.

He will not cajole or arm-twist regional leaders who oppose you, and even if he tries, it will come at great cost to Somalia and to you.

Leadership Lessons from Somalia’s Past

History is a repository of lessons for leaders, and Somalia’s past is filled with significant events that offer valuable insights.

Let us take, as examples, two presidents whose leadership ended in failure and the warlords of Mogadishu, who were also defeated.

The unexpected and abrupt end of the presidencies of Mohamed Siad Barre and Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, as well as the ousting of the Mogadishu warlords, serve as a powerful reminder to all politicians — especially those currently in power — of how leadership can collapse when public discontent, societal challenges, and the concerns of key groups (intellectuals, businesspeople, youth, religious leaders, and women) are ignored.

In 1991, President Mohamed Siad Barre fled Mogadishu as armed uprisings encircled his administration. Until the final moment, he believed his grip on power was unshakable.

Similarly, in 2008, President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed resigned following a public revolt against his government, combined with parliamentary opposition and the withdrawal of international support.
President Yusuf was unaware of how deeply unpopular his policies and governance direction had become.

The downfall of these leaders was brought about by two critical failures that often doom those in power.

Today’s leader must avoid these pitfalls:

1.Loss of Credibility – The erosion of public trust and confidence in a leader, stemming from repeated failures, contradictions, or corruption. This weakens a leader’s authority and influence.

2.Crisis of Legitimacy – A widespread public rejection of a leader’s authority, fairness, or right to govern. This undermines their ability to enforce order, implement policies, or gain public trust.

Causes of Loss of Credibility and Legitimacy Crisis:

1.Broken promises

2.Contradictory actions or statements

3.Favoritism and nepotism

4.Lack of transparency and accountability

5.Corruption and abuse of power

6.Ignoring public grievances

7.Self-serving behavior

8.Inaction or ineffectiveness

9.Economic collapse

10.Perceived weak or indecisive leadership

Consequences of Loss of Credibility and Legitimacy Crisis:

1.Loss of public trust and support

2.Political instability

3.Strengthening of opposition forces

4.Rejection of state institutions
