🚨 The Regional Convening on Africa Family Law Reform has ended today but the conversation and advocacy for Just and Equitable Family Laws is not over!
Participants issued a Communiqué that expressed deep concern over the persistent gender inequality embedded in family laws and legal systems; condemned the intensifying and coordinated backlash against women’s rights, driven by anti-rights and anti-gender movements; and, called on governments and legislators in the East and Horn of Africa to enact pending Family Law Bills in alignment with regional and international human rights instruments, such as the Maputo Protocol and CEDAW.
A special appeal was also made regarding Sudan, where the ongoing conflict has devastated families and worsened legal and gender inequalities, particularly affecting women and girls.

🚨 Just families build just societies. It’s time for the law to reflect that truth!
From marriage and divorce to property rights, inheritance, child custody, and protection from violence, women and girls deserve legal systems that recognize their rights and protect their dignity.
🔍 An Overview of Family Law Developments in the Greater Horn of Africa Region:
🟢 Somalia & Somaliland: family laws such as the Sexual Offences Bills are blocked, leaving millions of women without legal protection.
🟢 Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti & Uganda: Stalled family law bills, partial reforms, deep-rooted discrimination persists.
🟢 Ethiopia & Djibouti: Family laws in place but cultural and religious norms continue to be used in systematically suppressing women’s rights
This #InternationalDayofFamilies, join us in calling for:
✅ Passage and enforcement of gender-sensitive family laws
✅ Alignment of national laws with regional and international human rights standards (e.g., #CEDAW & #MaputoProtocol)
✅ Public education and community engagement to shift harmful norms and raise legal awareness
✅ Gender transformative capacity development of legal institutions and inclusive participation in legal reform processes
