I am not defending anything here. But if I recall correctly, there is a famous Steve Jobs folklore from the original Macintosh development days around 1982 (not sure if it is fully true, but it was personally motivating for me during my early days of jobs).

The team was falling behind on their Jan 1984 deadline. Jobs noticed that while the engineers were working late, they were starting to protect their weekends.

​1 evening, Jobs stormed into the software area. He felt the momentum was slipping & that the project needed total devotion to succeed.

​He looked at the team & declared: ​"If you are not going to come in on Saturday, do not bother coming in on Monday."
